  • The Buzzards Bay Coalition's salt marsh long-term monitoring aims to assess and track the condition of salt marsh vegetation, fauna and elevation, as well as collect base-line data over time. This project monitors about 20 plots per marsh in 12 different salt marshes distributed across Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Field surveys including observations of soil compressibility, landscape disturbance, location of marsh boundaries, species counts of both fauna and vegetation, evidence of fauna in the form of burrows, amount of crabs in pit traps, vegetation percent cover, and vegetation stem height and count began in summer 2019. Permanent elevation monuments in upland areas were installed in 2019 and are used as reference points for permanent transects and for elevation surveys.
