The project was designed to determine the litter flux of biomass and nutrients to the forest floor in 14 stands (the “Federer Chronosequence”) of northern hardwood forests. These 14 stands are located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Monitoring litterfall occurred from 1993 through 1996, and again from fall 2003 through summer 2006.
Litterfall mass from 1993 through summer 1996 is displayed as annual sums at the basket level. Litterfall mass from fall 1996 through summer 1997 is displayed as the mean annual litterfall mass per transect line. Litterfall mass from fall 2003 through summer 2004 is displayed as annual sums at the basket level. Litterfall mass from fall 2004 through summer 2005 is displayed as the mean litterfall mass per transect line in both fall and summer. Litterfall mass from fall 2005 through summer 2006 is displayed at the basket level, separated by season. Litterfall was sorted by species in all years except for 2005-06. Twig mass is reported for the 2005-06 litter collection. Litter chemistry was measured in fresh litter samples collected in the same stands from 1994 through 2004.
Raw, unedited data sorted by season can be found in “Other Entities”, though note the substantial changes that occurred between these values and the processed values published in this dataset.
