Abstract:

Detecting effects of climate change is typically done using physical measurements such as spring snow water equivalent or stream flow, but these metrics do not address ecosystem effects of climate change. A potential surrogate for reduced summer streamflow and soil moisture in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed (CRMW) are wet meadows that are fed by melting snow and shallow groundwater in the headwaters of several major streams. Saturated soils through most, if not all, of the growing season in these montane meadows support a rich assemblage of mostly herbaceous wetland plant species and exclude upland species. Species composition and abundance in wet meadows would likely change if reductions in snowpack and a longer summer dry season resulted in drier meadow soils. Wet meadows are essentially intermediate storage sites for water flowing through the watershed and are predicted to respond biologically in detectible ways should their hydrology change. Such changes could occur relatively quickly (3-10 years), as short-lived plant tissues (one to two years typically) allows for rapid plant community response to changes in resource levels

Description:

Soil moisture was measured with a HydroSense Soil Water Measurement System.

Description:

Vegetation sampling transects aligned E-W, with 5-6 transects N-S about 6 m apart

6 to 5 samples per transect, standard distance between plots along transect was 5 m, except where noted.

All distances are relative to sw corner of transect 1, plot 1 (0 m)

5 x 0.1m2 quadrats per sample over 1 m distance.

Flexibility with number of transects, distance between transects, and samples per transect to approximate 30 samples per meadow.

Objective is to have fairly equal sample size and be able to evaluate changes from N to S within each meadow. Hypothesis is that old growth meadows will show more difference than meadows in harvested areas.

Abstract:

This study has two general goals. The first is to assess the need for specific restoration thinning treatments around montane meadows in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed. The second is to use montane meadows as an indicator for a long term monitoring of climate change impacts on watershed ecosystems.

Montane meadows are an important element of biodiversity in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed, representing unique aquatic and riparian habitat within a largely forested landscape. If timber harvest of surrounding forest has negatively impacted these meadows, forest restoration treatments around these meadows should be designed to hasten recovery of conditions that will reverse meadow impacts. This project will assess the impacts of timber harvest on montane wet meadows in the watershed to determine if timber harvest has led to changes in plant species composition and abundance. These results will then be used to inform the design of restoration thinning treatments in surrounding forest.

Because many montane wet meadows are supported by emerging groundwater, they are likely to be sensitive in relatively short time-frames to potential impacts of climate change on watershed hydrology. Consequently, they have strong potential as indicators of hydrologic change brought about by warmer winters, reduced snowpack, and warmer summers that are expected to occur as climate changes in coming decades. The sites sampled and data collected for assessing timber harvest impacts can also serve as baseline conditions for a long-term monitoring program to detect ecosystem-level changes resulting from climate change. Such an early-warning indicator of watershed climate impacts would be extremely valuable in planning adaptive responses to broader watershed impacts from climate change
