Title:Open sky Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) monitored near two agricultural headwater streams in the Judith River Watershed (Montana, USA) during the 2022 field season
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Open sky Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) was monitored near ground level near three small headwater stream reaches in the agricultural area of the Judith River Watershed (JRW) lowlands in Montana, USA. The reaches were located on Louse Creek and Porter Creek on the Moccasin Terrace, which is a strath terrace located centrally in the intermountain basin between the Little Belt (west) and Big Snowy (east) mountain ranges. PAR was measured using LiCOR LI-192 quantum sensors and data was collected using Campbell Scientific data loggers. The quantum sensors were oriented approximately vertically, but precise leveling equipment was not used on the mounts. Timing of deployments varied with site access, but occurred between April and June during the field campaigns of 2022. The original planned use of the data was for inputs to models of whole-stream photosynthetic primary production. Data were collected as part of the Montana Consortium for Research on Environmental Water Systems (CREWS) project, with goals to understand how riparian corridors in the JRW process solutes from agricultural applications in transport from soils to streams.

Purpose:
Water quality in the Judith River Watershed (JRW) reflects a century of agricultural land use. High nitrate concentrations and persistent pesticide detections in shallow aquifers and streams are the consequence of soil amendments coupled with effects of weather and management for cereal and livestock production. This dataset contains results from multiyear deployments of sensors in riparian corridors of Louse and Porter Creeks on the Moccasin Terrace. The motivation for this data collection effort was to explore how riparian areas managed as cattle pastures contribute to alteration of groundwater entering streams, and attenuation of high nitrate concentrations and pesticide mobilization in those waters, resulting from intensive upland crop production.

The full Legal Code text is available below, and also here: https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/legalcode. ### Legal Code Text - CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication Statement of Purpose The laws of most jurisdictions throughout the world automatically confer exclusive Copyright and Related Rights (defined below) upon the creator and subsequent owner(s) (each and all, an "owner") of an original work of authorship and/or a database (each, a "Work"). Certain owners wish to permanently relinquish those rights to a Work for the purpose of contributing to a commons of creative, cultural and scientific works ("Commons") that the public can reliably and without fear of later claims of infringement build upon, modify, incorporate in other works, reuse and redistribute as freely as possible in any form whatsoever and for any purposes, including without limitation commercial purposes. These owners may contribute to the Commons to promote the ideal of a free culture and the further production of creative, cultural and scientific works, or to gain reputation or greater distribution for their Work in part through the use and efforts of others. For these and/or other purposes and motivations, and without any expectation of additional consideration or compensation, the person associating CC0 with a Work (the "Affirmer"), to the extent that he or she is an owner of Copyright and Related Rights in the Work, voluntarily elects to apply CC0 to the Work and publicly distribute the Work under its terms, with knowledge of his or her Copyright and Related Rights in the Work and the meaning and intended legal effect of CC0 on those rights. 1. Copyright and Related Rights. A Work made available under CC0 may be protected by copyright and related or neighboring rights ("Copyright and Related Rights"). Copyright and Related Rights include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. the right to reproduce, adapt, distribute, perform, display, communicate, and translate a Work; 1. moral rights retained by the original author(s) and/or performer(s); 1. publicity and privacy rights pertaining to a person's image or likeness depicted in a Work; 1. rights protecting against unfair competition in regards to a Work, subject to the limitations in paragraph 4(a), below; 1. rights protecting the extraction, dissemination, use and reuse of data in a Work; 1. database rights (such as those arising under Directive 96/9/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 1996 on the legal protection of databases, and under any national implementation thereof, including any amended or successor version of such directive); and 1. other similar, equivalent or corresponding rights throughout the world based on applicable law or treaty, and any national implementations thereof. 1. Waiver. To the greatest extent permitted by, but not in contravention of, applicable law, Affirmer hereby overtly, fully, permanently, irrevocably and unconditionally waives, abandons, and surrenders all of Affirmer's Copyright and Related Rights and associated claims and causes of action, whether now known or unknown (including existing as well as future claims and causes of action), in the Work (i) in all territories worldwide, (ii) for the maximum duration provided by applicable law or treaty (including future time extensions), (iii) in any current or future medium and for any number of copies, and (iv) for any purpose whatsoever, including without limitation commercial, advertising or promotional purposes (the "Waiver"). Affirmer makes the Waiver for the benefit of each member of the public at large and to the detriment of Affirmer's heirs and successors, fully intending that such Waiver shall not be subject to revocation, rescission, cancellation, termination, or any other legal or equitable action to disrupt the quiet enjoyment of the Work by the public as contemplated by Affirmer's express Statement of Purpose. 1. Public License Fallback. Should any part of the Waiver for any reason be judged legally invalid or ineffective under applicable law, then the Waiver shall be preserved to the maximum extent permitted taking into account Affirmer's express Statement of Purpose. In addition, to the extent the Waiver is so judged Affirmer hereby grants to each affected person a royalty-free, non transferable, non sublicensable, non exclusive, irrevocable and unconditional license to exercise Affirmer's Copyright and Related Rights in the Work (i) in all territories worldwide, (ii) for the maximum duration provided by applicable law or treaty (including future time extensions), (iii) in any current or future medium and for any number of copies, and (iv) for any purpose whatsoever, including without limitation commercial, advertising or promotional purposes (the "License"). The License shall be deemed effective as of the date CC0 was applied by Affirmer to the Work. Should any part of the License for any reason be judged legally invalid or ineffective under applicable law, such partial invalidity or ineffectiveness shall not invalidate the remainder of the License, and in such case Affirmer hereby affirms that he or she will not (i) exercise any of his or her remaining Copyright and Related Rights in the Work or (ii) assert any associated claims and causes of action with respect to the Work, in either case contrary to Affirmer's express Statement of Purpose. 1. Limitations and Disclaimers. 1. No trademark or patent rights held by Affirmer are waived, abandoned, surrendered, licensed or otherwise affected by this document. 1. Affirmer offers the Work as-is and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Work, express, implied, statutory or otherwise, including without limitation warranties of title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non infringement, or the absence of latent or other defects, accuracy, or the present or absence of errors, whether or not discoverable, all to the greatest extent permissible under applicable law. 1. Affirmer disclaims responsibility for clearing rights of other persons that may apply to the Work or any use thereof, including without limitation any person's Copyright and Related Rights in the Work. Further, Affirmer disclaims responsibility for obtaining any necessary consents, permissions or other rights required for any use of the Work. 1. Description:
## Measurement methods Where more details are available, each description below is a cross-reference of the brief methods caption provided in the descriptions of the columns in full metadata for Data Tables under the Data Entities heading. ### *Deployed sensor clock* Measurement times are recorded based on the system time on the Campbell data logger. The Campbell system time was periodically synchronized with field computer. All data loggers are configured for UTC and any time zone adjustments are made at time of analysis. ### *Average of differential voltage port measurements on a Campbell data logger wired to a LiCOR LI-192 quantum sensor* LiCOR quantum sensors are current transducers but include a shunt resistor adapter to allow compatibility with voltage-based analog data loggers (such as Campbell data loggers). The raw voltage measurements from the transducer are provided. Reported values are the average of 30-second interval measurements over the 5-minute logging interval. ### *Average of linear calibration calculations from the voltage on a LiCOR LI-192 quantum sensor measured by a Campbell data logger* PAR measurements are calculated based on a linear relationship with the voltage measurement (proportional to current from the PAR transducer), based on a multiplier provided by the manufacturer. Reported values are the average of 30-second interval measurements over the 5-minute logging interval. ### *Field deployment protocol* PAR sensors were mounted approximately vertically by strapping them to T-posts. Leveling equipment was not available to ensure precise vertical orientation. Stations were checked with incremental data downloads approximately every 2 weeks. Field QAQC started with removal of data in downloads from older deployments. Data at Porter Creek also had to be removed due to the instrument being disturbed by cattle (see Porter Creek pipeline in 01\_input.zip for details). Description of potential QAQC tags in the column tag_FieldQAQC_quality include: - nkp: No Known Problems with the data - ium: Isolated Unknown Malfunction caused a temporary lack of PAR data availability (NA value) A column with a flag indicating whether the transducer was precisely leveled is also included (tag_FieldQAQC_leveled, 0 means not leveled and 1 means leveled). In the case of this data product, the transducers were not precisely leveled, so the value for this flag is always 0. ## Data processing methods This data product is designed to provide the provenance of final tables in a pipeline format, to the degree that provenance is available. Where available, raw data files from instruments and manufacturer software are available in the 01\_input.zip file. The coding used to process the data is available in the 02\_protocol.zip file. In this case, final processing was carried out with R scripts and R markdown files. Incremental files created for the purpose of data processing are available in the 03\_incremental.zip file. Ready-to-use analytical data are available at the data package's root level (on the dataset landing page under the "Resources" section) and are described in the full metadata. This data product represents a hierarchy of pipelines. The 01\_input.zip file contains folders with the individual pipelines for processing the data from each site: JRWPCPAR01 and JRWRRPAR02. Detailed notes on the processing for each site are available in those pipelines. ### *Contents of 01\_input.zip* - *meta/* - Directory with project templates for metadata - *abstract.md* - Markdown file with the data product abstract - *attributes_jrw.xlsx* - Excel file with commonly used table column attributes in the project - *intellectual\_rights.md* - Markdown file with the licensing information - *methods.md* - Markdown file with the methods information - *people_jrw.xlsx* - Excel file with tabular data on people associated with the project used for metadata generation. - *purpose.md* - Markdown file with the broader purpose of the research - *sites_jrw.xlsx* - Excel file with sites for the JRW project - *JRWPCPAR_UWQ9224_v20220709* - Pipeline with the data processing for the Porter Creek site (see documentation within the pipeline for further detail) - *JRWRRPAR_UWQ9225_v20220709* - Pipeline with the data processing for the Louse Creek railroad site (see documentation within the pipeline for further detail) - *licor_quantum_calib.pdf* - Calibration sheets for the LICOR quantum sensors used ### *Contents of 02\_protocol.zip* - *.RProfile* - An R profile file with R code that establishes the appropriate working directory for the R project used to generate this data product. - *00_build_input.R* - R script to recompile the pipelines for individual sites - *01_processing.Rmd* - R markdown creating the data tables, general visualization, and associated metadata. - *01_processing_compile.R* - R script that compiles the processing R markdown to an HTML document processing_notes.html in the incremental folder - *10_metadata.Rmd* - R markdown for compiling the data product, defining the generation of the metadata file, and the EML file based on EDI EML assembly line. - *10_metadata_compile.R* - R script that compiles the workflow R markdown to an HTML document (metadata.html) and the metadata to an EML file (eml.xml). - *RStudioProject.Rproj* - An RStudio project file provided for convenience in working with the code generating this data product with the appropriate working directory. R code in the protocol depends on R packages: readtext, knitr, EMLassemblyline, and xml2. Code also makes system calls to the zip command using arguments compatible with Info-Zip implementation 3.0, which appear to be mostly consistent with linux zip arguments. ### *Contents of 03\_incremental.zip* - *processing\_notes.html* - Notes on the processing of the data from the source pipelines R code included in this product will generate temporary files in the ./03\_incremental/temp folder. These temporary files contain no unique data or metadata and thus are not archived in the corresponding zip file.
