Abstract:

As a complement to an existing seasonal long-term lake monitoring program created to document ecological health, the high-frequency time series Muskegon Lake Observatory was established in 2011 and continues to date. The observatory consists of a buoy system that continuously gathers water quality, hydrology, and meteorological data during the ice-free period (April-December) each year.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

A buoy sensor system is deployed during the ice-free period on Muskegon Lake to measure, record and archive various meteorological, hydrological, and water quality data. It consists of a meteorological sensor, water sensors, and accompanying communication, computational and storage protocols and devices.

On-buoy sensors perform meteorological measurements at 5-minute intervals and underwater measurements at 15-minute intervals. For ease of analysis and consistency, meteorological data are reported only at 15-minute intervals, corresponding to the time intervals of underwater measurements. The buoy data logger downloads this near real-time data into the local archive located at the base station computer at the Annis Water Resources Institute. All data is backed up off-site at frequent intervals to avoid loss.

Software automatically flags select data if it detects errors. Periodically, sensors are removed from the lake and bench-tested for proper calibration, and a more thorough evaluation of the data is performed to determine if it meets the data quality objectives. Any issues with the sensors or data are noted and the data archive is flagged appropriately.
