Title:Submersed Aquatic Vegetation community multi-year data from the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta in California
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:
Since 2007, field data have been collected in the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta in northern California for the purpose of training and validating invasive species maps derived from remote sensing imagery over the Delta. The field crew collected submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) species location data. For each point they noted attributes such as species name(s), location, cover estimates, and patch size. In addition, a thatching rake tethered to a rope was thrown off the side of the boat and pulled back out of the water; Secchi depth was measured using a Secchi disk and depth to the SAV mat was estimated by the field crew. Points were collected in patches larger than 9 square meters (3 m x 3 m). Point locations were measured using high precision (sub-meter accuracy) Trimble DGPS units (Trimble Navigation Limited, Sunnyvale, California) with Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) differential correction. All data points were exported as ArcGIS shapefiles and projected to UTM Zone 10N, Datum WGS-84 however this dataset includes the Latitude and Longitude of each point in decimal degrees. The spatial and attribute data quality was checked by examining photos of the data points and confirming the identify of the documented species.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:
GPS location data collected from airboats and motorboats in the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected using Trimble DGPS units (Trimble Navigation Limited, Sunnyvale, California) with Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) differential correction for GPS location. For offset points, a compass was used to measure bearing and a rangefinder for measuring distance.
Instrument(s):Trimble DGPS unit, compass, rangefinders
Description:
A quartered black and white Secchi disk was used to measure Secchi depth. The Secchi disk attached to a rope graded at 0.5 feet intervals was slowly lowered into the water column on the shadow side of the boat until the demarcation between black and white quarters was hard to see. That was noted as the Secchi depth with a precision of 0.5 ft.
Instrument(s):Quartered black and white Secchi disk
Description:
Several cameras (Nikons and Canons) were used to take field photos over the years. Several photos were taken per field data point. At least one photo of the larger region within which the patch was situated and one close-up of each species observed. A photo of a foot/shoe was used to separate series of photos of different data points.
Instrument(s):Camera
Description:

Thatching rakes with 34-38 teeth tethered with a long rope were used to collect rake samples at more than half the data point locations. The rake was thrown off the side of the boat into the patch and allowed to sink to the bottom of the water column and then dragged in and pulled up. The species on the rake and their relative cover were estimated and noted and then the sample was dropped back into the water.

Instrument(s):Thatching rake
Description:

Caveats of data collection: These data were not collected randomly. The study area was not sampled uniformly through the years. In 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 spring, only a third of the Delta was sampled. Some flooded islands within the Delta was difficult to access hence they were accessed some years but not others. If airboats were available, access was easier than if all fieldwork was only done on motor boats. The column "Preassigned" in the data indicates that some points ("Yes" in that column) were randomly assigned. The boat then navigated to those points and data were collected. Only the points that were collected this way are truly random.

Some species only appeared for the first time during this period and might have been missed or misidentified in the first year of appearance. For example, Richardson's pondweed (Potamogeton richardsonii) might have been misidentified in earlier years as curlyleaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus). Species that could not be effectively differentiated in the field were recorded by the name of the most abundant species e.g. Stukenia pectinata (Sago Pondweed) for S. pectinata, S. filiformis and P. foliolus.

Abstract:

The funding for all the data collection in this data publication came from efforts to map invasive species in the Delta using hyperspectral remote sensing imagery. The data collected in the field were used to test and validate maps of invasive species derived from this imagery. The methods and the corresponding dataset produced from this project are available at https://knb.ecoinformatics.org/view/doi%3A10.5063%2FF1N014ZX.

Maintenance

Maintenance:
Description:Two more years of data will be added to this dataset over time, summer of 2022 and 2023. Beyond that, if there is funding more data might be added. Data will also be retained in servers of the University of California, Davis and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, USA.
Frequency:annually
