Abstract:

Two research cruises (12PL027 and 13PL018) were conducted aboard the University of Otago RV Polaris II in 2012 and 2013 to collect marine sediment cores and 2d seismic data as part of a collaborative research effort to study late-Pleistocene and Holocene environmental change in New Zealand.

Data includes 4 Boomer seismic profiles, 4 CHIRP seismic profiles, seismic line GPS tracks, diatom assemblages (raw counts and relative abundances) and microfossil assemblages (raw counts and relative abundances), and radiocarbon ages from 4 marine sediment cores. The data used to construct a post-glacial sea level curve for Fiordland, New Zealand are also included, as well as data from published literature plotted for global comparisons.

Description:

High-resolution 2-d seismic reflection surveys were conducted aboard the RV Polaris II using Ferranti Boomer and Benthos C3D CHIRP systems. Data were processed on board using Globe Claritas (with an academic license) in order to identify coring sites with the highest likelihood of recovering the lacustrine–marine transition in locations where low modern sedimentation rates and/or erosion of modern sediment were interpreted on seismic data.

Description:

Diatoms were extracted from sediment cores according to standard methods (Renberg, 1990; Abrantes et al., 2005) modified to suit 2–3 g samples and preserve valve structure. Following disaggregation with sodium hexametaphosphate ((NaPO3)6), samples were bathed in 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 30 degrees C for two weeks to oxidise organic matter and rinsed with DI water. Suspended diatom solution was mounted on slides with Norland Optical Adhesive #61.

A minimum of 300 whole valves were counted at 400× magnification with species identifications confirmed with 1000× magnification. Diatoms were identified to species level according to regional sources, when possible (Crosby and Wood, 1958, 1959; Wood, 1961a,b; Foged, 1979) and non-regional sources otherwise (Krammer and LangeBertalot, 1986). A minimum of 300 microfossils were also counted under 400× magnification for general microfossil assemblages. Each sample was categorised as lacustrine, brackish or marine based on the assemblage.

Description:

Material for radiocarbon dating was extracted from selected depths above and/or below the ingression contact. Sediment samples were wet-sieved using 500 and 250 μm screens and terrestrial wood fragments were picked using a binocular microscope. Terrestrial plant material (leaves and wood fragments) was pre-treated using an acid– alkali–acid method (Brock et al., 2010). Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon ages were processed at the GNS Science Rafter Radiocarbon Lab in New Zealand (NZA) or the National Ocean Sciences AMS Facility at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (NOSAMS). Radiocarbon ages were calibrated using Calib7.0 (Stuiver and Reimer, 1993) with the Sh13 curve (Hogg et al., 2013). Data plotted from Gibb (1986), Pickrill et al. (1992), Guilderson et al. (2000), and McHugh et al. (2008) were re-calibrated according to the latest calibration curves (Hogg et al., 2013; Reimer et al., 2013) where modern day is 1950. All ages used in the sea level curve are calibrated unless otherwise specified.

Abstract:

The modern fjords of southwest New Zealand were previously stranded lakes isolated from the Tasman Sea by bedrock and moraine sills following the retreat of glaciers at the Last Glacial Maximum. The isolated lake basins were subsequently inundated with sea water when sea-level rise overtopped the sills. A record of the lacustrineto-marine environmental transition is preserved in the fjord basin sediments and is identified in two New Zealand fjords with high-resolution seismic data and paleoenvironmental analysis of sediment cores. Seismic data are used to constrain the maximum sill depth and microfossil assemblages are used to track the lacustrine-to-marine transition. Chronology is based on fourteen radiocarbon ages.

A relative sea-level curve for Fiordland, New Zealand is constructed based on sill depths and age constraints on the marine incursion. The sea-level curve allows insights into estimated uplift rates for Fiordland during the Holocene. From a lowstand of at least 107 mbsl 14,750 yr ago, these data reveal a stepwise transgression. Meltwater Pulse 1b is identified between 12,400 and 11,400 yr ago, with a second acceleration in sea-level rise observed 9700 yr ago.
