Abstract:

This data set contains raw data supporting the research entitled “Livestock grazing outweighs climate in driving trait variation of a widespread alpine plant” (currently under peer review), which documents how phenotypic traits of a widespread herbaceous plant in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Herminium monorchis, vary with grazing intensity and environmental conditions.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Field sampling and measurement: we selected alpine meadows in the Eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau where Herminium monorchis occur as field sites (n = 24). At each site, we collected phenotypic information for mature (intact and blossoming) individuals of H. monorchis. All mammal dung, as well as multiple topsoil and forage (edible herbaceous plants) samples, were also collected within an area of 10 × 10 m. We also recorded coordinates and elevation of each site.

Description:

Sample processing: Upon returning to the laboratory, all collected mammal dung and forage materials were dried to constant mass; topsoil samples were processed accordingly in order for measurement of organic carbon, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus contents.

Description:

Statistical analyses: Environmental data of each filed site were collected from online databases. Dry mass of mammal dung, forage materials, as well as site-specific mean annual temperature, were used to compute estimates for local grazing intensity. With all these data collected, we constructed structural equation models to quantify how phenotypic traits of H. monorchis are regulated by grazing and environmental factors, both directly and indirectly.
