Abstract:

Seedling demography data are provided in annual censuses of 600 seedling plots in an equatorial, ever-wet rainforest in eastern Ecuador, in Yasuní National Park. This long-term study uses standardized methodology from the Smithsonian ForestGEO network of plots, and in particular coordination with similar studies in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, and Barro Colorado Island, Panama. We address hypotheses about the maintenance of forest diversity and long-term variation, and link our data to companion studies of flowering and fruiting phenology and sapling and adult dynamics in the Yasuní Forest Dynamics 50-ha Plot. The project is ongoing, and additional data will be added as they are processed.

Description:

The 600 seedlings plots (1m x 1m) are arrayed in groups of three around a raised, 0.71m x 0.71m seed trap. Together these form 200 census stations. The stations are arrayed in a stratified random design every 13.5 m along the Yasuní Forest Dynamics plot trail system, and on alternating seeds of the trail. The plots were established in 2002, and every woody plant <50 cm height at that time was marked with a tag and unique identifier number, mapped within the plot, identified to species or morphospecies, and measured (height to apical meristem, basal diameter, and count of numbers of leaves).

Description:

Annual censuses of the 600 plots take place roughly June-August each year. In each census in each plot, newly recruited seedlings (no minimum size threshold) are tagged, mapped, and identified. Older seedlings are determined to have died or survived. All new and surviving seedlings are measured (height to apical meristem, basal diameter, number of leaves).
