Abstract:

These are data from the initial tree census of the 18-hectare (400m x 500m, with 20m x 20m subplots) WVU Forest Megaplot at Summit Bechtel Reserve in Fayette County, West Virginia. West Virginia University (WVU) faculty and students completed the census during 2018-2022, recording the geographic position, diameter at breast height (DBH), and species of all trees greater than 5cm DBH. These data describing the initial census and analysis of spatial patterns in above ground carbon stocks are complete, and are fully described in the associated 2023 WVU thesis by Megan Ponczek, which is planned to be submitted for peer-reviewed publication. The WVU researchers plan to re-census the plot approximately every five years in order to monitor changes in carbon stocks.

Description:
UTM coordinates for the northeastern corner post of each sub-plot, as well as the naming convention for the sub-plots. Columns are designated by letters A-T, and rows are designated 1-25, totaling 500 corner posts and 456 total surveyed sub-plots (e.g, C5 is located in the 5th row of column C). Sub-plots in column T and sub-plots in row 25 are not surveyed due to no other corner post designating the boundary of the sub-plot.

AET_(mm) is the modeled actual evapotranspiration, PET_(mm) is the modeled potential evapotranspiration, and D_(mm) is the modeled water deficit for each sub-plot and each have units of millimeters. Age_Since_Harvest_(years) is a categorical variable representing the estimation of years since the last harvest of that sub-plot. Avg_Wood_Density_(g_cm-3) is the average wood density of that sub-plot, found by averaging the wood density of all trees in each sub-plot, and weighing it by basal area.

Description:

The plot corner posts were mapped with a survey-grade GPS unit and marked with rebar.

Instrument(s):RTK GPS
Description:

Using a compass and tape measure, the bearing and distance to each tree was mapped relative to the northeast corner post of the subplot. Trigonometry was used to calculate the UTM coordinate of each tree based on the UTM coordinate of the corner post.

Description:

Diameter at Breast Height was measured at breast height on the uphill side of the tree 4.5 feet from the base of the tree.

Description:

Geographic variables describing each subplot were calculated in a GIS from a Digital Elevation Model.

Description:

Allometry was used to derive biomass and carbon for each tree, which were then summarized by sub-plot.
