Dreissenid shells deposition, and benthic community data in the Rouge and Huron Rivers, Southeastern, MI., USA.

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:edi.1493.1
Title:Dreissenid shells deposition, and benthic community data in the Rouge and Huron Rivers, Southeastern, MI., USA.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This data package was assembled and accompanies a project entitled "In the absence of living populations, Dreissenid shells can still impact small rivers," which was carried out in the ROuge and Huron Rivers located in Southeatern, MI., USA in 2017. We assessed dreissenid shell impacts on macroinvertebrate and fish communities. This package includes dreissenid shell density data, water quality data during macroinvertebrate sampling, macroinvertebrate data, water quality data during fish sampling in spring, fish data from spring, water quality data during fall sampling, and fish data from fall. All data tables feature rivers, identifiers, GPS coordinates, and sample dates.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Areas with and without dreissenid shells in the Rouge and Huron Rivers were selected for sampling. There were 8 sites in each river, for a total of 16 sites. Four sites in each river featured dreissenid shells and four did not for a total of 16 sites total.

Description:

Dreissenid shell densities were quantified using a 1/2 m^2 frame quadrat tossed in triplicate at dense areas of each river site. Individual valves were removed from within the quadrat area, rinsed in a 2mm mesh sieve, and separated from substrates. A mean quantity of shells per m2 was calculated.

Instrument(s):1/2 m^2, PVC quadrat. 2-mm sieve.
Description:

Current velocity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity were recorded during sampling. Water chemistry values were measured with a YSI sonde, and the surface float method was used to determine current velocity.

Instrument(s):YSI ProDSS multi-parameter water quality meter, tennis ball, and transect tape.
Description:

Macroinvertebrate communities were evaluated during the summer of 2017 in the Rouge and Huron rivers using the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Rapid Bioassessment Protocol. One hundred meter reaches of the river in each site location, targeting riffles with cobble. Macroinvertebrate sampling was conducted using a D-net (150-µm mesh). Organisms were isolated, preserved in 90% ethanol, and transported to the laboratory where all animals were later classified to family.

Instrument(s):D-net (150-µm mesh), 50ml Falcon tubes, 90% ethanol.
Description:

Fish communities were assessed in spring and fall at all 16 sites. Fish were sampled using a 3 X 1.25m, 3.18mm mesh seine for one hour, targeting dreissenid shell-impacted zones in the stream bottom. Fish were preserved in a bucket, and after sampling was complete, they were identified to species and released.

Instrument(s):3 X 1.25m, 3.18mm mesh seine, 1-gallon bucket.

Abstract:

The effects of living and dead dreissenid mussel populations on native faunal communities in large rivers and lakes have been well researched, but their impacts in small, wadable streams have not. Though mussel invasions in these systems are uncommon, their shells have been found in high densities in benthic environments and may adversely impact stream communities. Shell densities were quantified using quadrats in two wadable streams to assess their impacts on native benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Eight reaches of each river, four with dreissenids and four without, totaling 16 locations were sampled. Macroinvertebrate and fish communities were characterized using widely accepted diversity and environmental tolerance indices. Shell densities in dreissenid-invaded sites were significantly higher when compared to sites with only native shellfish in both rivers. Dense beds of shells had lower abundances of sensitive macroinvertebrates and higher tolerance to organic pollution, but bed density had no impact on macroinvertebrates or fish diversity overall. These findings differ from studies in large lakes and rivers which indicate that both fish and macroinvertebrate community diversity are influenced by dreissenid shell deposition. Thus, a different approach to management and restoration may be necessary to maintain a natural community composition in wadable streams.
