Description: |
Areas with and without dreissenid shells in the Rouge and Huron Rivers were selected for sampling. There were eight sites in each river, for a total of 16 sites. Four sites in each river featured dreissenid shells, and four did not, for a total of 16 sites total.

| Description: |
Dreissenid shell densities were quantified using a 1/2 m^2 frame quadrat tossed in triplicate at dense areas of each river site. Individual valves were removed from within the quadrat area, rinsed in a 2mm mesh sieve, and separated from substrates. A mean quantity of shells per m^2 was calculated.
| Instrument(s): | 1/2 m^2, PVC quadrat. 2-mm sieve. |
| Description: |
Current velocity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity were recorded during sampling. Water chemistry values were measured with a YSI sonde, and the surface float method was used to determine current velocity.
| Instrument(s): | YSI ProDSS multi-parameter water quality meter, tennis ball, and transect tape. |
| Description: |
Macroinvertebrate communities were evaluated during the summer of 2017 in the Rouge and Huron rivers using the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Rapid Bioassessment Protocol. One hundred meter reaches of the river in each site location, targeting riffles with cobble. Macroinvertebrate sampling was conducted using a D-net (500-µm mesh, 0.3m width). Organisms were isolated, preserved in 90% ethanol, and transported to the laboratory, where all animals were later classified to the family taxonomic level.
| Instrument(s): | D-net (500-µm mesh, 0.3m width), 50ml Falcon tubes, 90% ethanol. |
| Description: |
Fish communities were assessed in spring and fall at all 16 sites. Fish were sampled using a 3 X 1.25m, 3.18mm mesh seine for one hour, targeting dreissenid shell-impacted zones in the stream bottom. Fish were preserved in a bucket, and after sampling was complete, they were identified to species and released.
| Instrument(s): | 3 X 1.25m, 3.18mm mesh seine, 1-gallon bucket. |
