Abstract:

Data were collected at the Faville Prairie State Natural Area in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Faville Prairie is a 60-acre (35.4 hectares) wet to wet-mesic remnant prairie. Plant species richness and abundance were collected at 180, 2x2m quadrats spaced 100 feet (30.48 meters) apart in a 15 x 12 grid. The impetus for the study was to detect changes in the plant community after a historic flooding event in the late spring of 2008. Previous data collected in 1978 at the same quadrats was used as "before" conditions and the 2010 sample was considered "after".

CodeThe coordnates as indicated (see "Point Coordinates" sheet) were collected using aTrimble GeoExplorer 6000 XH in different years 2008 to 2015 by locating the permanetn markers. The grid of permanent points is not geometrically perfect relfecting the imperfection of Partch's surveying methods. In figures that present data such as the distributio of species, "virtual" locations that create a geometrically perfect grid therefore contain small deviations from the actual placement on the ground. Considering that the GPS locations also include some error, these discrepaancies are not considered importnat.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

At each plot, plant species richness was collected in 2x2 meter quadrats, divided into four 1m square quads. Starting in the northwest 1m sq. quad, all plant species rooted in the plot were recorded. Sampling moved in a counter-clockwise direction. Only new plant species were recorded in the southwest, southeast, and northeast quads. Species richness was reported per the 2x2 quadrat. Plant species abundance was recorded using the point-intercept method as described in Zedler and Herrick (2023).

Description:

Max Partch designed the original Faville Prairie State Natural Area plant monitoring grid in 1948. We used his 1978 plant survey in the current study and is included in this data package.
