Abstract:

This dataset holds a list of activites typically carried out by repositories that are related to the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance. Activities are divided into four categories to reflect broad skill sets usually found in repository personnel: Situational Awareness, Outreach, Repository Protocols, Technology. Each activity was mapped to one or more of the CARE sub-principles, with booleans in individual columns.

Description:

After engaging in initial discussions about the challenges that repositories face when acquiring, curating, and disseminating data and other information about Indigenous Peoples, communities and their lands, the authors met regularly over three years to discuss how practices of digital repositories can be enhanced with respect to the CARE Principles. Discussions of both the CARE Principles and repository practices were held to facilitate mutual learning. This led to the recognition of the need to jointly develop recommendations to provide guidance for data repositories that acquire data and other information about Indigenous Peoples and communities, including their lands.

Description:

To facilitate the development of such recommendations, the CARE Principles were associated with relevant data repository activities. Attaining agreement on the mapped associations led to ongoing revision of the identified relationships, based on the discussions of each of the CARE Principles and the associated repository practices that had been identified. In general, the meaning of the activity was defined by the ESIP repository members, while the association of these to the CARE Principles was led by members of the Collaboratory for Indigenous Data Governance.

Description:

The ongoing discussions about the application of the CARE Principles to repository practices also identified ways to improve repository capabilities and services when acquiring, managing, and disseminating data about Indigenous Peoples, communities and territories. During each meeting of ESIP and the Collaboratory, notes were taken and revised iteratively during subsequent meetings to provide clarification, answer outstanding questions, and identify recommendations for repositories as the discussions evolved. From these discussions, relevant repository activities were described along with ways in which they could be improved to address the CARE Principles.

Description:

Categories to organize these nascent recommendations for repositories were developed and refined as consensus began to emerge. Like the continuing discussions among the authors, the recommendations and the categories for organizing the recommendations also evolved to reflect the emerging consensus. Graphical representations of the evolving recommendations were developed and successively revised to depict the emerging shared understanding and consensus. The resulting categories of recommendations, along with the associated graphical depictions, describe the consensus that was achieved.
