Fresh (wet) and dry seed masses were measured on samples of seeds. Mean dry mass, mean wet mass and sample size are presented. The term “seed” is used for true seeds, single endocarps or other 1-seeded dispersal units. For animal-dispersed species, seeds were removed from fruit and cleaned of any fruit pulp.

All seeds were collected in in eastern Ecuador, mostly near the Estación Científica Yasuní (ECY) as part of the ongoing phenology project (Garwood et al. 2023). Many seed collections are part of the specimen vouchers maintained at ECY for the project: data on date, location, description, and identification of collections is maintained in an Access file by Garwood and updated as needed. Reference to these collections is included in the seed mass data file. Other data were collected from samples that were discarded after measurement.

One to five collections per species were measured. Seeds were dried at about 65°C for at least 2 days or longer if seeds were large or had very thick seed coats or endocarps. Mass was measured on a Sartorius analytical balance.

All data were reviewed and revised by Garwood in 2024.

Number of seeds per fruit per species was determined from various sources by Garwood in 2016. These included notes on our seed germination data sheets, our photographs of ripe fruit, our descriptions of collections from our voucher collections, and dissection of fruits in our voucher collection. In addition, Garwood used published taxonomic information and information available on the web. All sources of data are noted in the file. Seeds/fruit is an approximate number based on available evidence and provided as a single approximation per taxon. (It is not a statistical mean based on counts of seeds in multiple fruit from multiple plants.) Nonetheless, it is a useful measure for converting fruits into seeds for studies of seed production. Fruit type and dispersal mode were determined from the same sources. Taxonomic information was updated by Garwood in 2024.
