Title:Temperature logger deployment methods and irradiance-biased temperature data, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Red Sea, 2023.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Solar irradiance can offset the temperature recorded by underwater sensing instruments (aka "loggers"). We collected temperature and PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) data during two short-term in situ deployments on a shallow fringing reef adjacent to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the Red Sea. The first deployment quantified the measurement bias due to solar heating over five days in February 2023 while the second compared the effect of different shading methods on logger performance over 24 hours in June 2023. We also recorded temperature in a controlled calibration bath in the lab with ten of the most widely used loggers to further assess their accuracy, response time, and intra-logger variation. Finally, to understand current practices of measuring temperature on coral reefs, we summarized logger deployment method details from a literature review of coral reef studies published from 2013 to 2022. Such details included how often loggers recorded the temperature, the depth where loggers were deployed, and whether the authors reported shading or protecting their loggers. This data package is complete and part of a larger project that aims to develop an instrument deployment framework for restoration-based reef monitoring, which includes instrument recommendations and deployment guidelines.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Two previous publications, Lentz et al. 2013 and Bahr et al. 2016, identified the need to and recommended shading temperature loggers. To assess whether the coral reef community adopted this practice, we conducted a literature review of studies published between 2013 and 2022 using Web of Science at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). From over 4,000 papers, we identified 329 that deployed 397 unique temperature loggers on coral reefs across 51 countries. We then summarized details from these studies about which logger brands, models, sampling frequencies, and depths they used as well as whether they reported shading or protecting their loggers.

Description:

In the lab, we used a controlled, high-precision calibration bath to test logger accuracy at temperatures in 2-degree intervals from 17–41 degrees Celsius. Three replicates of 10 different logger models from 6 different manufacturers recorded temperature every 5 minutes in the bath. Each temperature step was ramped over 10 min and held for 30 min to compare the accuracy of temperature measurements as a function of logger response time.

Temperature measurements recorded by the loggers were downloaded with the brand-specific software or mobile app and converted into a csv file. The data from each logger was then merged together to create the dataset for the bath calibration.

Description:

For 5 days in February 2023, 3 loggers of each of nine models were deployed at 2-3m depth on a fringing reef adjacent to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Loggers were set to record every 5 minutes and mounted on two separate acrylic racks, one with and one without a black acrylic panel shade fastened approximately 15cm above them. Calibrated Odyssey PAR loggers were used to evaluate how much temperature offset is due to levels of irradiance. Because Sea-Bird SBE-56 temperature loggers are considered the industry standard for high-precision temperature measurements and were found to not exhibit any irradiance bias, we used the average Sea-Bird temperature to compare all other logger (shaded and unshaded) measurements to.

Odyssey PAR loggers were calibrated against a LI-COR LI-1500 cosine light meter before deployment. After retrieving loggers from the field, data was first downloaded from the Odyssey Xtract mobile app and Xpert website and then corrected using the calibration curve developed pre-deployment with the LI-COR. Corrected measurements were averaged across unshaded replicate loggers.

Temperature measurements recorded by the loggers were downloaded with the brand-specific software or mobile app and converted into a csv file. The data from each logger was then merged together to create the dataset for this deployment.

Description:

For 1 day in June 2023, Onset Hobo Pendant loggers were deployed at 1m depth at the same KAUST fringing reef with one of the following shading treatments: control (unshaded), secured within a white PVC pipe, or wrapped with white, black, or reflective tape (n = 2 per treatment). A subsequent 1-day deployment at 5m was conducted to assess the effect of solar heating on temperature measurements at lower light levels. Similar to the February deployment, offsets of temperature measurements were calculated by comparing shaded and unshaded Hobo loggers to a co-deployed shaded Sea-Bird SBE-56.
