Title:Multi-year census of arthropod abundance on the plant Ligusticum porteri near Crested Butte, CO
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to track year-to-year variation in aphid abundance on the host plant Ligusticum porteri (Apiaceae). We censused arthropod abundance on the flowering stalks of L. porteri weekly in June-August from 2017 to 2020. The censuses took place in ten L. porteri populations near Crested Butte, CO. The sites were by Brush Creek, Lake Irwin, and Washington Gulch. While the same populations were used across years, we randomly selected ten flowering plants in each population in each year (N = 100 plants per year). Observations focused on colonization by the aphid Aphis asclepiadis, its mutualist ants, and natural enemies. When found, we counted other arthropods as well, identifying them to Family or Order in the field. We also counted the number of host plant flowering stalks and inflorescences (umbel). We tracked flowering phenology using a numerical score (0-8). To track senescence, we used a qualitative score (TB=turning brown and AB=all brown) for terminal and primary umbels.

Description:

We tracked arthropod abundance on flowering stalks of the host plant (Ligusticum porteri) from 2017-2020 at ten sites near Crested Butte, CO. Ligusticum porteri is a perennial plant with fernlike leaves and one to many flowering stalks that emerge from an underground rhizome. In June of each year, we randomly selected ten flowering plants along a 30m transect placed at the center of each population. Each plant was numbered 1-10. The populations are named Gulch 1-5, Brush 1-2, and Irwin 1-3, and the same populations were sampled year after year. The total number of weekly censuses depended on year: (1) seven weekly censuses in 2017 (6/15 through 8/9), (2) nine weekly censuses in 2018 (6/16-8/10), (3) ten weekly censuses in 2019 (6/13-8/17), and (4) nine weekly census in 2020 (6/16-8/11). For the host plants, we kept track of the numbers of flowering stalks and inflorescences (umbels) on each plant. The number of flowering stalks gradually increases in June as they emerge from the rhizome. We counted ants into four morphospecies groups: Formica fusca, Formica podzolica, Formica rufa, and Tapenoma sessile. We also scored the phenology of the top-most (terminal) and second level (primary) inflorescences (umbels) on each plant. This used a numeric scale from 0 to 8, where 0 represents umbels enclosed in bracts and 8 are flowers setting fruit. Because umbels may senescence early or without setting fruit, we developed a coarse ranking system to capture this process. ‘TB’ signifies the onset of senescence with umbels turning brown. ‘AB’ indicates complete senescence of umbels. We kept track of the number of mirid (Hemiptera, Miridae) adults and nymphs separately. All other insects and arthropods were identified to family or order in the field, depending on group.
