Title:Greenhouse gas data of permafrost-affected reservoirs on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 2016-2018
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset is a collation of 3-year direct measurement values of CO2, CH4 and N2O concentrations and fluxes of permafrost-affected reservoirs on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, along with information on location and chemical conditions of the study sites. Given the rarity and high value of this data set, it will be very valuable for the next update to global reservoir GHG flux estimates.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

This dataset was obtained by sampling in two permafrost-affected reservoirs on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau between 2016 and 2018. Partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) was determined in situ by pumping surface water through a Dissolved CO2 System (S157-P, Qubit Biology Inc.). Simultaneously, we collected triplicate surface water samples in 120 mL glass serum bottles at wrist depth at each sampling location for dissolved CH4 and N2O determination. After poisoning with saturated solutions of NaCl for CH4 and ZnCl2 for N2O, the serum bottles were sealed with butyl stoppers below the water surface, crimped with aluminum caps, and stored at ambient temperature in the dark. CH4 and N2O concentrations were measured using the headspace equilibration technique on a gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector and a micro election capture detector (Agilent 7890B GC-FID & μECD) for CH4 and N2O, respectively. GHG fluxes were measured using floating chambers. Four 24-L chambers were deployed for 1 hour in each site of the reservoir or channel transect. After mixing the chamber content 3 times, 50 mL of gas was withdrawn from the chamber’s headspace through an enclosed system at 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 min.
