Title:Tree species identity, diameter and qualitative canopy health measurements (full, partial or dead) from 2005 to 2023 on 12 experimental oak loss plots in Black Rock Forest, NY.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Black Rock Forest established a series of 12, 0.56 ha plots in 2005 to assess impacts of the loss of tree in the genus Quercus on the forest ecosystem (entitled the Future of Oak Forests experiment). Three trunk girdling treatments, with control plots were instituted in 2008. Each plot also contained an ~10m by ~15m deer exclosure to assess the impact of herbivory post-disturbance. Trees were measured twice per year from 2008 to 2013 (except 2009 when trees were measured once) and once per year from 2014 to 2023. Data include tree species identity, diameter at breast height (DBH), canopy health (a qualitative assessment of approximate cover as full, partial or dead), presence/absence of sprouts, and location within the plot. All live trees equal to or larger than 2.5 cm DBH are included in the dataset.

Description:

Site characteristics

Black Rock Forest (BRF) is located in the Hudson Highlands region of southeast New York State, USA (41°24′ N, 74°01′ W). While the mean annual air temperature is 9.7 ºC, air temperature is quite seasonal, with mean monthly temperatures ranging from 24 ºC to -2.1 ºC (NOAA, 2020). Mean annual precipitation is 1.3 m and the topography is relatively sloped (10-30º). Soils are moderately to excessively drained, rocky and shallow, with 0-60 cm to lithic bedrock (approximately 60% of site) and 35-90 cm to fragipan (approximately 35% of site) (Soil Survey Staff, USDA 2022). This deciduous temperate forest is dominated by oak species (Quercus spp.) which make up approximately 70% of the canopy trees (Schuster et al., 2008). Oak species present include white oak (Quercus alba), red oak (Q. rubra), chestnut oak (Q. montana), and black oak (Q. velutina). Common subordinate species are red maple (Acer rubrum), sugar maple (A. saccharum), black birch (Betula lenta), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), and black gum (Nyssa sylvatica). Before BRF was established as a research forest in 1927, much of the area had been repeatedly logged for approximately the previous 200 years.

Description:

Experimental setup and data collection

Twelve 75m x 75m experimental plots, assigned to one of four treatments, were laid out in a three by four plot grid on the north slope of Black Rock Mountain in 2005. The layout is a semi-randomized block design grouped by slope position (low, middle and high), where each treatment is repeated once within each of the slope positions, for a total of three replicates per treatment. In 2008, each plot received one of four different treatments: 0% of the trees girdled (control), 50% (by stem number) of oak trees girdled, 100% of all non-oak trees girdled, and 100% of oak trees girdled. Trees were girdled using a chainsaw cutting 3-5 cm into the trunk bark of the tree to sever phloem transport (Noel, 1970), mimicking the mechanism by which many pathogens block the vertical flow of nutrients through the cambium. Girdled trees were left standing if greater than 10 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) and felled if they were smaller. Trees that continued to leaf out, were girdled a second time in 2010. Each plot was divided into nine 25m x 25m subplots (north, northeast, northwest, east, center, west, south, southeast and southwest); all oak trees within a plot and all trees within the central subplot have been censused annually since 2005 (except for 2014) to establish species identity, record sprouting, and assess tree health (alive or dead via leaf presence) and the DBH of living trees. At the start of the experiment trees were included when greater than 2.5 cm DBH, this threshold was lowered in 2016 and new trees were added to the census once they reached 0.7 cm DBH but was raised again in 2017 to 1.0 cm DBH.

Post girdling tree canopies were assessed to determine girdling effectiveness and to monitor tree health. Dead trees were visited annually to determine the presence or absence of stump sprouts.

Deer exclosures, roughly 10m x 15m, were set up in late 2008 and oak trees found in the exclosures were noted. In 2020 all trees within the exclosure on control plots were measured.

In 2009 all trees (including fallen and standing dead) were mapped using an x,y coordinate system with the origin (0,0) at the northwestern corner of the plot. Measurements from the origin were taken to the half foot. The x-axis extended along the northern border of the plot and increased in value going approximately east. The y-axis extended along the western border of the plot and increased in value going approximately south.

Abstract:

Many diseases threaten deciduous forests. Black Rock Forest is predominantly oak (Quercus spp). Sudden oak death (Phytophthora ramorum) and oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum) could potentially devastate northeastern forests if their spread is not contained. In 2005 Black Rock Forest began measurements on 12, 75m by 75m experimental plots entitled the Future of Oak Forests experiment. These plots were subdivided into 9, 25m x 25m subplots (northwest, north, northeast, west, center, east, southwest, south and southeast). A suite of biotic and abiotic measurements were measured on these plots including data on: tree species identity, tree diameter at breast height (DBH), canopy health (a qualitative measurement of cover), understory vegetation diversity and cover, seedling counts, small mammal diversity, invertebrate diversity, soil water chemistry, soil nitrogen and nitrogen mineralization, soil carbon, soil respiration, soil fungal diversity, light availability, soil temperature, soil moisture and air temperature.
