Abstract:

The Cache Slough Complex is an ecologically significant area, with many restoration efforts of various kinds set to take place within its boundaries. These efforts which are tied to regulations set forth by the Biological Opinion, will have unknown impacts to in‐stream water quality. For this reason, the Department of Water Resources’ Water Quality Assessment (WQA) unit developed a monitoring program to establish baseline water quality measurements to help understand the environmental impact of these restoration projects and ensure pre‐restoration water quality data is available to compare against post-restoration water quality. To do so, data was collected at various sites that represent all major inputs and outflows within the Cache Slough Complex from September 2013 to December 2021.

Description:

Collection Methods:

Field and laboratory data for this study was collected aboard a vessel from 09/04/2013 to 12/08/2021, field measurements for dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, pH, and water temperature were collected using a YSI 556 and a HACH 2100 turbidimeter were used to collect turbidity. Starting on 09/19/2017, a YSI Pro-DSS was used to collect all field parameters. All field measurements were collected at a 1-meter depth (or one half the distance to the substrate if the site was less than six feet deep) and recorded onto field data sheets. Field measurements were taken using either a YSI 556 or a YSI Pro-DSS instrument for the following parameters: dissolved oxygen, turbidity, specific conductance, pH, and water temperature. Physical grab samples were obtained from 1 meter depth using a stainless-steel bucket and processed for the following analytes: standard minerals, standard nutrients, total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), trihalomethane formation potential/haloacetic acid formation potential (THMFP/HAAFP), Carbonaceous Biochemical Oxygen Demand (CBOD, BOD), bromide, Ultraviolet Absorbance (UVA), total suspended solids, and chlorophyll a. A 0.45 µm Versapore capsule filter and a peristaltic pump were used to process analytes that required field filtration (i.e., dissolved concentrations), except chlorophyll a. These capsule filters were rinsed based on approved departmental methods with de-ionized (DI) water prior to sample collection. Samples of chlorophyll a were collected using a hand vacuum pump with a 1 µm glass fiber filter, not to exceed 5 psi or 10 inHg. When possible, these samples were filtered in subdued light to minimize risk of sample degradation. For samples that did not require field filtration (i.e., total concentrations), a churn splitter was used to homogenize the sample water prior to collecting them into sample containers for laboratory analysis. After sample processing, all samples were placed in an ice chest with blue ice. After the sampling event, all samples were either submitted to the laboratory or stored in a refrigerator or freezer until they were submitted or shipped for laboratory analysis.

Sample Processing and Tracking:

Most samples were analyzed by DWR’s internal chemical laboratory, Bryte Lab, while THMFP/HAAFP samples were analyzed by the subcontracted lab, Weck Laboratory. Historically, it was common for Bryte Laboratory to use Department-approved procedures that deviated from the standard or EPA methods. These approved deviations were associated with sample preservation techniques. A chain of custody (COC) form would accompany all samples submitted or shipped for laboratory analysis to formally relinquish and track samples. Copies of written standard operating procedures for all laboratory analysis methods are available upon request (email data contact).

Quality Assurance/Quality Control:

The instruments used to collect field measurements for this study were calibrated prior to conducting field sampling and underwent a post-field calibration check after returning from the field to quantify any instrument drift. Quality Control (QC) samples were also collected during the study period to identify any potential contamination and assess reproducibility. This QC data was not analyzed to produce this data set, but can be made available upon request.

Historical Changes:

Starting on September 19, 2017, a YSI ProDSS was used to collect field data. This instrument replaced the older YSI-556 and HACH 2100 turbidimeter instruments. Additionally, two sites were added midway through the study period, which were Wildland’s Restoration Site at Stairstep and Liberty Cut below Stairstep.
