Daily rainfall series and rainfall erosivity in Mexico for three climatic normals (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017)

General Information

Local Identifier:edi.1762.3
Title:Daily rainfall series and rainfall erosivity in Mexico for three climatic normals (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017)
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

As in many countries around the world, there are some issues in the Mexican rainfall series, such as missing values, short measurement periods, and series homogeneity (breaks due to station relocation and measurement mistakes), which further compound the challenge of using climate data. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop a complete and helpful rainfall series database by following an imputing and homogenization process of the rainfall series. This research has compiled and systematized a national dataset with daily rainfall and rainfall erosivity for three climatic normals CN (1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017). We have used the "climate" package to fill the data. After, we calculated daily rainfall erosivity using a power law model. As a result, we obtained 1370, 1679, and 1683 rainfall series for the CNs 1968-1997, 1978-2007, and 1988-2017, respectively. The mean values of the rainfall erosivity for the three CNs were 3600 (SD 3748), 3296 (SD 3500), and 3461 (SD 3382) MJ mm/ ha h yr, respectively. We are making this database available for public consultation for researchers and students, technical assistants, decision-makers, and others interested in environmental studies in Mexico.

Description:

Downloading. The data was downloaded from the official SMN site [https://smn.conagua.gob.mx/es/]. In the case of this project, 5454 files in plain-text format were downloaded.

Data Source

Description:

Pre-processing. A pre-process was carried out to facilitate the handling of data. It consisted of separating the header’s information and the daily data. The header data were extracted and converted to shapefile (sic) (.shp) format for spatial management. Subsequently, a conversion to comma-delimited formats (*.cvs) was also carried out.

Description:

Selecting the helpful rainfall series. This research looked over the RS in three climatic normals: CN1 (1968 to 1997), CN2 (1978 to 2007), and CN3 (1988 to 2017). After, we selected those rainfall series with less than 20% of missing values for each climatic normal.

Description:

Filling missing data. This process included three principal steps: quality assurance, homogeneity analysis, and data filling. These procedures were made using "climatol" package.
