Data package contains a dataset of distances(m) of 15 dyads generated from GPS collar data of 6 female savannah elephants as they were being released from semi-captivity to the wild in Okavango Delta, Botswana from November 1st, 2021-November 29th,2023. The dataset is provided as part the manuscript `Dyadic distance in African savannah elephants (Loxotonda africana) increases during release from semi-captivity to the wild`.

the time corresponding to the date the specific distance point was recorded

distance in meters of 2 individual elephant that make up the specific dyad. the distance was computed from UTM points collected by GPS collars

the release adopted a soft release which was categorised into phases, where human interventions were progressively withdrawn until the elephants where fully released from semi-captivity

the hours of the day were categorized into four categories to asses how dyad distance varies throughout the day.

sub-herd categories were generated based on the enclosures the elephants overnighted in while in semi-captivity. dyads comprising of individuals who resided in the same enclosure were placed in the same category

Description:

Dyadic distance was computed using the point distance formula in Microsoft Excel 365 (Microsoft Corporation, Washington, USA) for every 30-minute fix recorded by the collars.

The study was conducted in Okavango Delta Botswana in a management area called NG26. It is privately leased to Abu Private Reserve who conducted tourism based activities off 2 safari camps. The release was done near a research camp 15km from the safari camps.
