Abstract:

Demographic data on 5,060 individually marked plants of the endemic State and federally listed Polygala lewtonii (Lewton's milkwort; Polygalaceae) were collected from December 2001 to December 2017 at the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek in south central Florida, USA. Data collection is still ongoing. In 220 permanent 25 cm radius circular plots, plants were marked with plastic toothpicks and wire stake flags with a unique identification number. Data collection occurred quarterly with survival and recruitment recorded in March, June, September and December and more detailed measures of size and fecundity taken in March. This species is amphicarphic with both showy-open flowers produced in spring (chasmogamy) and closed, self-pollinating flowers both above- and belowground produced in late summer (cleistogamy). Therefore, our fecundity data are based only on chasmogamy. This dataset also captures post-fire mortality and recruitment events following four prescribed burns.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

At the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek, 220 permanent circular plots were established across six management units in yellow sandhill habitat. Plots were initially paired, with one being occupied by Polygala lewtonii and another randomly placed within the vicinity, however, occupancy has shifted. All plants within a 25 cm radius were marked with plastic toothpicks (of various colors and playing card suits) that signified the recruitment cohort based on month and year. We recorded individual plant distances from the plot center and angle direction to relocate individuals in the case of loose flags. Plot were visited four times per year in March, June, September and December to record quarterly survival data and mark any newly recruited seedlings or new adults. Plants that had died were given a "dead" code (0) indicating first time dead but toothpicks and marking flags remained in the field. At the next census, if the plant was still dead, it was given a "previously dead" code (9) and the toothpick and marking flag were removed from the field. Plant dormancy does not occur in this species and very few individuals marked as dead were alive in the subsequent census. In March, we took additional size measures to document annual growth and fecundity. We counted the number of flowering stems and the total number of stems on each plant, and recorded maximum stem height and maximum crown diameter in centimeters. This property has been affected by four prescribed burns during the 2001-2017 study, although not all plots were affected. Fire occurred in August 2001, December 2007, June 2009 and May 2015. We collected three levels of data following each fire. Post-burn plant status recorded whether a plant was unburned, singed (some green), scorched (no green but brown leaves remained), or consumed (little to no plant material remained). Post-burn status of the plot was recorded as either unburned or burned. Percent of plot burned was recorded at intervals of unburned (0%), 10-30%, 31-60%, 61-90% or 100%. Plant specific data and percent of plot burned were not collected following the August 2001 fire.
