Title:Continuous Forest Inventory Long-term Monitoring on Forest Properties of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry 1970-2017
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) based in Syracuse, New York, maintains a series of Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) permanent plots on their Forest Properties. ESF has over 700 CFI plots located on 5 different properties, four properties in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York and one property south of Syracuse. Plots cover northern hardwood species including sugar maple, red maple, yellow birch, beech, white ash, red oak, white pine, hemlock, red spruce, and pine/softwood plantations of various species. Data is collected at ten year intervals on each property starting from initial plot establishment. Plot information collected includes: location information, slope, aspect, forest type, cutting history, and photo of plot. Tree information/measurements include (in general, trees greater than 3.6 inches diameter at breast height): tree tag number, species, tree history, diameter at breast height, sawlog height, bole height, total height, crown vigor, crown class, tree location, and tree notes. Data is collected/field checked/edited according to detailed written procedures by ESF professional staff with assistance of students. Data is collected to monitor general forest health, growth rates, mortality, and overall forest metrics. Data is used to calculate standing volumes, stocking of forest trees, carbon stocking in addition to other information.

Source
Code Definition
Code2
DefinitionCodominant - Trees with crowns forming the general level of the crown canopy and receiving full light from above, but comparatively little from the sides. Usually with medium-sized crowns more or less crowded on the sides. In stagnated stands, includes trees with small-sized crowns crowded on the sides.
Source

DefinitionHigh - Trees of better than average vigor. Must be dominant or codominant with good, long, full, dense crowns. Small dead branches resulting from natural pruning are not considered defects. No visible mortality risk.
Source
Code Definition
Code2
DefinitionMedium - Trees with average vigor. Crown must be dominant, codominant or intermediate with fair to good crown. The top may contain not more than 10% of the major branches dead within the green crown. (Major branches include branches from the main stem and first branches there-from.) Open rot in the crown is not permitted. Moderate mortality risk.

DefinitionLow - Trees with low vigor. Can be any crown position. The top is usually sparse with yellowing or die-back, or with many large dead branches. High mortality risk. Trees partially tipped due to wind (root system disturbed) or with greater than 50% of the crown destroyed should be put in this class.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

IMPORTANT NOTE: See included documents for details on property- and year-specific procedures. Some measures and guidelines for measurements change across properties and years.

Permanent Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) plots have been set up on the following SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry properties: Dubuar Memorial Forest (DMF), Heiberg Memorial Forest (HMF), Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF), Pack Demonstration Forest (PDF) and Pack Experimental Forest (PEF). Plots locations were laid out on a grid for all properties, except DMF where half of the plots were placed in hardwood stands and half in softwood stands. Plot centers were marked on the ground so the exact same plots can be remeasured.

Note: All plots are fixed area plots, although plot sizes vary from one property to another.

Data recorded for each plot include:

Individual trees on each plot are tagged and numbered, so each tree can be followed from one measurement to the next. Each tree measured is classed as a sawtimber tree or a pole timber tree based on diameter.

Note: Minimum diameter for measurement is different from one property to another.

Note: Plot sizes for sawtimber and pole timber size trees differ from one property to another.

Note: Break points between sawtimber and pole timber sized trees differ from one property to another and based on species (hardwood vs. softwood) on some properties.

Data recorded for individual trees include:

A subsample of five trees is chosen on each plot and the following data is collected:

Measurement procedures should be checked for each year of measurement and each property for detailed explanations on plot sizes, minimum diameter measured, break points between sawtimber and pole timber size trees, and definitions of codes and classes.
