Title:Forest Community Dynamics in Hemlock Overlook, Virginia: A Ten-Year Student-Collected Forest Plot Dataset
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

During a ten-year observation period three plots in Hemlock Overlook Regional Park were regularly sampled and the count DBH values and identities of all trees in the plots were recorded. In total there were 94 sampling events across the ten years with a total of 4536 trees counted and measured. This dataset adds to the literature a longitudinal consistent sampling dataset that can be used for forestry and forest ecology research.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Three habitats of interest were identified at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park (13220 Yates Ford Road, Clifton, VA 20124): the valley bottom, mid-slope, and ridge top. In each habitat, 50x20 meter (m) plots were set. Each plot was divided into 4 subplots using 50m and 20m tapes and the four corners of each plot were flagged. The 50 m tape was laid perpendicular to the slope of the hill, and the 20-meter tape was used to measure 10 m on either side of the center. The valley bottom plot was centered at 38.765821o latitude -77.410953o longitude at an elevation of 77.42 m. The mid-slope plot was centered at 38.765462o latitude -77.410459o longitude at an elevation of 77.56 m. The ridge top plot was centered at 38.761907 o latitude -77.408651 longitude at an elevation of 83.82 m. Students enrolled in Foundations of Ecology and Evolution used DBH tapes to measure trees in three tree stands designated in Hemlock Overlook Regional Park in Virginia over 10 years. Students changed each year, but plot locations and protocols remained the same. Students received instruction on how to use DBH tapes to measure trees, and were instructed to collect measurements of all trees over 3 centimeters DBH within each plot. Trees were not identified to species level by students, but were identified as tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipfera), red maple (Acer rubrum), oaks (Quercus spp.), beech (Fagus grandifolia), pines (Pinus spp.), or other (all other species). The study occured in Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, a small (161.87 ha) regional park located in northern Virginia. Hemlock Overlook, named for a grove of hemlock trees in the northern region of the park, is one of several parks lining Bull Run River, including Fountainhead Park and Bull Run Regional Park. Bull Run is a 52.8-km-long tributary that flows south to the Occoquan River. An area 185 square miles, including 10.93% impervious surfaces, drains to the closest point on the stream to the study location (StreamStats). The park is heavily forested with land cover typical of Virginia Piedmont Forests. The plots were sampled at least once per year each year from 2007 through 2017. The plots were sampled in the fall spring or summer semesters - as indicated in the dataset. The fall semester extends from September to December the spring semester extends from January to April and the summer semester extends from May to August. During some semesters plots were sampled more than once indicated by replicate number.
