Fear and safety chemical cue data in crayfish

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:edi.362.1
Title:Fear and safety chemical cue data in crayfish
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

In this data, you’ll find crayfish movement data (walking speeds and times spent in different sections of the test arena) as a response to differing concentrations and types of fear cues (predatory and alarm cues) as well as differing levels of safety cues. The organization of the fear cues and safety cues in the arena were orthogonal to each other which allows a user to examine movements along each of the different stimuli levels separately or in combination. The movement of the crayfish was digitized at 1 point per second and at a single location (center of the carapace) of the animal.

Data Table Name:
Fear_safety_raw_data_public
Description:
The data were collected to analyze behavioral reactions of crayfish to different chemical stimuli representing predation events. These two stimuli were bass odor and alarm odor. In addition, a series of shelters were used in the test arena which created a safety gradient that ran orthogonal to the gradient created by chemical cues. The movement of crayfish and shelter use was analyzed.

Definition:This is the number indicating the animal that was run. Each animal is run in a single trial, but in two fifteen minute segments. The first is exploratory and the second is with odorthe treatment consists of two conditions: Odor and exploratory. The exploratory phase is run first which is followed by the introduction of odor. The odor consists of two treatments, bass that have been fed crayfish or alarm odorCOM means the center of mass which is the average location for the animal over the whole trial. The Fear location is the average X component. The four squares along the x axis represent increasing volumes of stimuli with 4 being the largest volume and 1 being the smallest volume. Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

The testing arena was constructed with safety cues (shelters) first. During the exploratory phase, crayfish were allowed to move through the tank in absence of any chemical cues. After a 15 minute acclimation period, the crayfish was removed from the arena and different aliquots of predatory or alarm cues were added directly into the middle of each shelter. Immediately after the chemical cues were added, the crayfish was added back into the arena and allowed to move for 15 more minutes. All trials were video taped using high definition Sony camcorders. After the collection of the data, videos were digitized offline at a rate of 1 point per s using Xcitex Lite motion capture software. All videos were calibration to convert pixel coordinates to real world cm units. The subsequent x, y positions of the crayfish were used as the raw data for an r code to calculate movement parameters as well as duration spent in different parts of the arena.

Instrument(s):Sony HDR-CX405 cameras were used to record movement and were mounted on a tripod above the tank
