Abstract:

A changing climate and increasing human population necessitate understanding global freshwater availability and temporal variability. To examine lake freshwater availability from local-to-global and monthly-to-decadal scales, we created the Global Lake area, Climate, and Population (GLCP) dataset, which contains annual lake surface area for 1.42 million lakes with paired annual basin-level climate and population data. Building off an existing data product infrastructure, the next generation of the GLCP includes monthly lake ice area, snow basin area, and more climate variables including specific humidity, longwave and shortwave radiation, as well as cloud cover. The new generation of the GLCP continues previous FAIR data efforts by expanding its scripting repository and maintaining unique relational keys for merging with external data products. Compared to the original version, the new GLCP contains an even richer suite of variables capable of addressing disparate analyses of lake water trends at wide spatial and temporal scales.

Description:

Step 1: Calculate lake-level annual seasonal, annual permanent, and monthly water area

Lake area estimates are derived by extracting seasonal and permanent water area from the JRC Global Surface water dataset (Pekel et al., 2016) located within 90 m of predefined HydroLAKES shapefiles (Messager et al., 2016). Permanent water is defined as water being present within a pixel for all months with valid observations, whereas seasonal water is defined as water that is present for at least one month but not all months with valid observations. Owing to increased temporal resolution of the JRC Global Surface Water dataset, we also extracted monthly area estimates within HydroLAKES shapefiles. Because water classification algorithms only identify liquid water, ice is not considered water, and therefore permanently frozen lakes are coded as having zero area, whereas seasonally frozen lakes will have seasonal surface areas that partly reflect external inputs and freeze-thaw cycles.

Step 2: Calculate lake-level fractional ice area cover

We estimated monthly lake ice coverage using MODIS daily snow cover produce and HydroLakes database. We used MODIS daily snow cover product (band name NDSI_Snow_Cover from MOD10A1.006, 500m spatial resolution) to estimate lake ice monthly status. Each daily snow cover image quantifies snow covered areal percentage into values from 0% to 100%, with values masked out for areas of missing data, low light condition, and cloud cover etc. For each day, daily snow cover images were used to estimate ice areal percent coverage for each lake using the following steps:

Daily snow cover image was first converted to a binary image of ice(1) and non-ice (0) using 15% as the threshold. Pixels with values ≥ 15% were assumed to be ice cover. The resulting binary ice image was then appended to the original snow cover fraction image as an additional band;

Lake ice fraction and missing data fraction were estimated by calculating fractional cover of ice pixels (or snow cover percentage pixels) and missing data pixels over the entire lake polygon region;

If the missing data fraction for a given day exceeded 20%, the observation was discarded from further aggregation;

Once we obtained the daily lake ice fractions (from both the binary ice image and the snow cover image) and removed the observations that contained substantial missing data (>20%) over the lake surface, we used month as the temporal unit to aggregate these values. To estimate monthly lake ice fraction for a given lake, we calculated minimum, maximum, mean, median, and observation count (i.e. no. of daily observations) for the month. All the metrics were carried out for both the daily mean snow cover value and the daily mean (binary) ice cover values.

When implementing the above steps in Google Earth Engine, we encountered memory limitation issues for some of the largest lakes, possibly due to the large spatial extent they cover. To resolve this, we reduced the resolution of the image for the lakes with surface area greater than 64 km2 before calculating the daily lake ice fractions. The resolution used in the calculation for the big lakes was implemented so that it scaled with the size of the lake surface.

Step 3: Calculate basin-level climate estimates

Expanding on the existing data available in the GLCP, additional climatological variables were obtained from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) (CITE). Downloaded MERRA datasets were hourly aggregates with original spatial resolution of 0.5×0.625 decimal degrees. From these broader datasets, we extracted variables for Humidity (2-meter specific humidity kg kg-1, QV2M), Cloud Cover (cloud area fraction for total clouds "1", CLDTOT), Radiation (net longwave flux LWGN, net shortwave flux SWGNT), and Monthly Precipitation (total precipitation land, bias corrected in kg m−2 s−1, or volumetrically, mm s−1, PRECTOTCORRLAND) and Temperature (2-meter air temperature in K, T2MMEAN). These subsets were exported from NASA Goddard Earth Sciences (GES) and Data Information Services Center (DISC) in a netCDF format for local analysis.

Monthly climate values for each basin in the GLCP were calculated following the procedure outlined in Meyer et al (2020). Rather than aggregating the hourly data into annual values data were converted into monthly values by averaging or adding the values as appropriate. With the exception of the temporal window, the data aggregation workflow was the same as that found in Meyer et al (2020) and aggregated rasters were resampled at 1/10th cell size through a bilinear interpolation. Resampled rasters were then exported to Google Earth Engine to be spatially paired with basins and basin level climatological values were extracted.

Step 4: Calculate basin-level human population estimates

As with climate data, human population was summed within each lake’s basin for each year of the GPW. Rasters were downscaled with a bilinear interpolation, where final population rasters had a resolution of 0.05x0.05 decimal degrees. Resampled rasters were then exported to Google Earth Engine to be reduced to basin-level summations.

Step 5: Calculate basin-level snow area cover

Monthly average snow cover estimations have been extracted from the MODIS global Level-3 (L3) data set within 0.05° (approx. 5 km) Climate Modeling Grid (CMG) cells (Hall ad Riggs, 2021). MODIS dataset was firstly reclassified keeping only information about snow coverage ranging from 0 to 100%. Other unnecessary 8-bit coded information such as cloud, uncertain and water pixels were masked out.

Basins from HydroBasin dataset have been used as zonal extraction input features after being rasterized and snapped to the MODIS dataset. The selection of a 0.05° resolution ensured a zonal information spatially consistent with MODIS raster datasets. Furthermore, smaller basin than 25 km2 have been automatically filtered out. The zonal statistics have been finally implemented for all 12 level of HydroBasin dataset for a period of 18 years from 2002 to 2020.

Step 6: Merge lake- and basin-level data products

All resulting derived products were merged into a single CSV. Due to large file sizes, each continent is contained within its own CSV, with the exception of North America. For lakes in North America, lake in Canada were split into 8 separate CSV files, and all remaining lakes in North America are contained in a separate CSV.
