Abstract:

The Dwight Center for Conservation Science at Pepperwood is an ecological institute dedicated to educating, engaging, and inspiring our community through habitat preservation, science-based conservation, leading-edge research, and interdisciplinary educational programs. Our mission is to steward the life and landscapes of the 3,200-acre Pepperwood Preserve and to advance science-based conservation of ecosystems throughout our region and beyond. The Pepperwood Breeding Bird Survey was initiated in the spring of 2007 with the goal of establishing a set of baseline bird community data that would be built upon for years to come. Four transects (totaling 38 points) are surveyed annually using standardized five-minute point count protocols outlined by the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now called Point Blue Conservation Science; Ballard et al. 2003) and the Handbook of Field Methods for Monitoring Landbirds (Ralph et al. 1993). Surveys are conducted by experienced volunteers during the breeding season starting in late April and ending in June, with each transect surveyed a total of three times. The Rogers Creek and Martin Creek transects were established in 2007. The Weimar Flat and Pepperwood Road transects were established in 2008 and 2012, respectively, to ensure comprehensive coverage across the various habitats that occur at the preserve including Douglas-fir forest, mixed hardwood forest, oak woodland/forest, chaparral, and open grasslands. This data set includes data collected between 2007-2009.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Four transects are surveyed annually using standardized point count protocols outlined by the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now called Point Blue Conservation Science; Ballard et al. 2003 - https://data.prbo.org/cadc2/index.php?page=songbird-point-counts) and the Handbook of Field Methods for Monitoring Landbirds (Ralph et al. 1993 - https://www.fs.fed.us/psw/publications/documents/gtr-144/00-front.html). We use a standardized Fixed Radius count method where each observed bird is assigned to a distance bin from the observer: <50 m, >50 m, or FlyOver. Point count observations are made starting within 15 minutes of sunrise and finishing 3–4 hours following sunrise, typically by 10am. Observations are not made in inclement weather conditions that would affect bird activity such as fog, high wind, or rain.

Each of the four transects are visited three times per year between late April and June, with at least 10–15 days between each visit. The point count order is reversed each sampling event to prevent bias associated with observation time. On average, 2–3 volunteers skilled in bird identification are present for each count, with one designated as a note taker for the day.

Points are approached as quietly as possible to prevent disturbing birds. Counts typically start within a minute of arriving at the monitoring location and last for five minutes. The species, number of birds observed, detection type (song, call, visual) and any breeding behavior the birds may be displaying are recorded.

If something interferes with our ability to detect birds during the five-minute count (e.g. a vehicle drives by), the count is stopped until the disturbance has passed, and the five-minute count starts over. Bird attractants are not used such as recorded or verbal calls or "pishing" to flush birds out.

Pepperwood has a comprehensive climate-ecosystem monitoring network at the preserve with hundreds of data streams. If you are interested in co-located data or more information, please contact research@pepperwoodpreserve.org or visit www.pepperwoodpreserve.org.

Verbal geographic location description: Pepperwood’s 3,200-acre preserve is situated northeast of the city of Santa Rosa in the Southern Mayacamas Mountains of California’s Northern Coast Ranges, approximately 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean by air and near the eastern extreme of coastal fog penetration. Pepperwood is uniquely situated at the headwaters of three watersheds — Mark West, Franz, and Brooks Creeks — key tributaries to the Russian River watershed. Elevation ranges from 186 feet at the northern tip of the preserve just south of Franz Creek to 1,560 feet on High Hill in its center. Situated in the California Floristic Province, a region recognized globally as a biodiversity “hotspot”, Pepperwood itself represents a biodiversity crossroads, featuring species representative of California's coastal, interior, northern and southern climates which converge in rich mosaic of plant communities.
