Abstract:

This data set contains long-term limnology data from Castle Lake (located 5440 ft above sea level in Northern California) on primary productivity, zooplankton and phytoplankton measurements, dissolved oxygen, nutrient chemistry, lake morphology, and fish measurements. Short-term research projects on benthic invertebrates composition and a bathymetric map can also be found within the data package. Ecological, watershed and climatological measurements taken characterize the limnology of Castle Lake, a pristine glacial cirque that is the largest (by volume) of the 25 alpine and sub-alpine lake within the larger Upper Sacramento River Watershed. Sampling Frequency: Varies depending on survey conducted. During summer months- multiple times during each month. Less frequent during winter months. This data collection part of an ongoing project funded by the US National Science Foundation, private donors, US AID, and the University of Nevada's Global Water Center.

Concentrations were calculated by dividing the total number of zooplankton counted by the volume of water sampled.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Secchi measurements were determined by averaging the observation of the secchi disk being lowered until no longer visible, and then pulled up until visible through the water column to the nearest tenth of a meter by one or two practiced individuals.

Description:

Minimum, maximum, mean monthly air temperatures and precipitation data were taken from the PRISM Climate Group from Oregon State University. PRISM Climate Group, Oregon State University, http://prism.oregonstate.edu, created 15 April 2021.

Description:

Water temperature was measured using a YSI probe starting in 1959, Biospherical Instruments Inc. BIC UV radiometer from 2014-2018, and RBR concerto or maestro high frequency profiler from 2019-2020. Temperatures for each meter increment depth were determined from 2014-2020 by averaging the temperatures measured 0.2m above and below each depth increment (for example, the temperature recorded for 15m is an average of measurements taken between 14.8m and 15.2m).

Description:

Ice out dates for Castle Lake are determined using in person visits to the lake or daily game camera photos of the basin. The lake is considered to be ice-free when 100% of the ice if off of the lake.

Description:

Chlorophyll a measurements: water from depth (0, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 32m) was collected into 1L bottles with a Van Dorn and filtered through a 250µm mesh to exclude any zooplankton and larger particles. For each depth sampled, two replicates of 150mL were filtered through Whatman GF/F 1825 47mm glass fiber filters and frozen immediately until processing.

To process, chlorophyll-a filters were placed into dark film cannisters with 20mL of methanol and left in a fridge for 24 hours for extraction (Marker 1972; Arar & Collins 1997). Once extraction time was complete, 6mL of methanol from each sample was pipetted into glass test tubes and chlorophyll-a was measured using a Turner 10-AU fluorometer.

The rate of primary productivity was determined at 13 discrete depths using the C14 method by incubating one dark and two light bottles for 4 hours during peak daylight hours (Steeman-Nielsen 1951; Goldman 1960). 50mL of water from each bottle was filtered onto 0.45µm Millipore membrane filters, dried, and counted on a Protean Instrument Corporation Model IPC-650.

Ammonium concentrations were measured by reacting samples with phenol, sodium hypochlorite, and potassium nitroferrocyanide (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Nitrate samples were measured by reducing samples with a hydrazine-copper solution (Lamphake et al. 1967). Soluble Reactive phosphorus concentrations were measured by acidifying samples with ammonium molybdate and reducing with ascorbic acid (Murphy & Riley 1962). Total phosphorus was measured by digesting samples with potassium persulfate and autoclaving for 45 mins.

New data sets may be added in future revisions (ei benthic invertebrate composition, snow water equivalent data, water chemistry, etc). Currently published files contained within the data package may be updated once samples have been processed within the off-site laboratory.
