Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

The dataset contains measurements of total phosphorus (P) flux rates between bottom sediments and the overlying water column for Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA. Flux measurements were made using ex situ sediment core incubations. Intact sediment cores and the overlying water were collected at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir in July of 2019 and February, April, June, August, and October of 2020 in order to assess spatiotemporal variation in sediment P flux rates. Cores were incubated under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions for 4-5 days. Daily measurements of total P in the overlying water were used to calculate areal P flux rates on a daily timestep. The dataset includes a table of raw total P concentrations, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH of the overlying water throughout the incubations, an r script detailing necessary calculations and cleaning procedures, and a final data table with calculated P flux rates. The dataset will be used to identify hot spots and hot moments of sediment P release in Green Valley Lake, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry. Additionally, the data tables and script provide an example of how to calculate P flux rates from sediment core incubations while accounting for artificial changes in water column total P concentrations due to daily sampling.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

To characterize seasonal and spatial variation in sediment P release in GVL, we collected intact sediment cores from the sampling sites across GVL in July of 2019 and approximately every other month from February to October of 2020. These cores were incubated under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions, and we monitored P release into the overlying water. For each sampling event, we also collected a sample of hypolimnetic water was collected and stored in a sealed carboy at 4°C to serve as replacement water for the core incubations.

Description:

For each sampling event, three replicate sediment cores were collected at each sampling site using a gravity corer (inner diameter 5 cm). The intact sediment cores and the overlying water were sealed in clear, acrylic core sleeves and transported at 4°C.

Description:

Back in the laboratory, the cores were exposed to temperature and dissolved oxygen treatments corresponding to conditions at each site at the time of sampling. Temperature treatments were achieved by securing the cores in either a water bath or an incubation chamber. Dissolved oxygen levels were manipulated by bubbling either air mixtures or N2 through the water overlying the sediment core. A slow, consistent bubble rate (~1 psi) was used to gently mix the water column without disturbing the sediment surface. After the cores have been installed in the ex situ incubation system, the total height of the water column within each core tube was measured and recorded. A known water volume needed to interpret how the P load in the water column changes over the incubation.

Description:

Samples of the overlying water were collected 12, 36, 60, and 84 hours after the initial incubation set-up. For each daily sampling, 50 mL of water was removed for analysis of TP. An equivalent volume of hypolimnetic water from the corresponding sampling site was used to replace the water sampled. A sample of the replacement hypolimnetic water was also analyzed for TP daily to account for changes in water column P due to sampling and sample water replacement. Samples were preserved with 100 µL concentrated sulfuric acid, digested, and analyzed in duplicate for TP using a molybdenum blue method on a Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer. A YSI ProDSS Multiparameter sonde was used to sample water column temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH daily.
