Abstract:

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are often labeled as major point sources for contaminants into the environment. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent contaminants that do not naturally degrade, are also introduced into the environment in this way. This project aims to open the “black box” that is WWTPs and determine what transformations of PFAS are occurring inside the plants. WWTP samples were collected by trained staff in July 2020 from two plants in central Wisconsin.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Using all plastic labware, samples are centrifuged and rinsed (if applicable), put through SPE-WAX columns, extracted with methanol, blown under N2 in a warm water bath to concentrate, filtered through a 0.45 um filter that has been rinsed with methanol, and stored in a 1.2-mL cryogenic vial until ready for analysis. Prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS, 300 uL of the stored extract is transferred to an autosampler vial. Results are analyzed using the Analyst software and uploaded to the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene LIMS system.
