Abstract:

HOBO temperature-sensing data loggers (hereafter, sensors) were placed under the surface of seven rock glaciers predicted to have the presence (n=4) or absence (n=3) of sub-surface ice in Rocky Mountain National Park and near Niwot Ridge Long-term Ecological Research site in Colorado. Sub-surface temperatures were recorded to evaluate habitat differences among American pika populations. All sensors (model H08 pro, H08, or H02; Onset Computer Corporation, onsetcomp.com) recorded temperature (±0.2° Celsius) every one or two hours for one year starting in September 2018. Each rock glacier received at least one sensor, positioned near the center and near pika sign. Three rock glaciers received an additional sensor positioned near the edge of the rock glacier near pika sign. Sensors were placed at similar depths (~0.75 m) and similar aspects.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Using sub-surface ice maps created by Janke 2005, a total of seven rock glaciers were selected in Rocky Mountain National Park (n=4) and Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research area (n=3). Three of the rock glaciers likely contain sub-surface ice while four likely do not contain sub-surface ice (Janke 2005). One to two HOBO temperature-sensing data loggers (hereafter, sensors) were deployed under the surface of each rock glacier for about one year. Sensors recorded sub-surface temperature in celsius every one to two hours. Each rock glacier received at least one sensor, positioned near the center and near American pika (Ochotona princeps) sign (e.g., fresh hay pile and/or fresh scat). Three rock glaciers received an additional sensor, positioned near the edge of the rock glacier near American pika sign. Sensors were placed at similar depths (~0.75 m) and at similar aspects. Rocks were placed over the sensor to ensure sunlight did not reach the sensor. The temperature data file archived here (AW_talus_temp_data.csv) is a concatenated list of all seven sensors, trimmed to insitu date.

Rock glacier likelihood (likely vs not likely) was determined using geographic data layers created by Janke (2005), who used a combination of photographs, field investigations, and previous studies of terminus (leading-edge) motion to classify rock glaciers along the Front Range. Rock glaciers likely to contain sub-surface ice (i.e., active rock glaciers) were classified as moving, exhibiting steep frontal (leading-edge) slopes and pronounced ridges and furrows due to the presence of ice (Janke 2005). Rock glaciers not likely to contain sub-surface ice (i.e., fossil rock glaciers) were classified by the absence of movement, indicated by gentler frontal slopes and increasing cover of vegetation (Janke 2005).
