Title:Influence of weather forecast resolution on the circulation of Lake George, NY.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset contains outputs of numerical modeling for Lake George, New York, hydrodynamics. These numerical simulations were generated to assess the impact of increasing the resolution of weather forecasts on the lake’s thermal state. This research focused on June 2017, when an increase of biological activity was associated to the deepening of the thermocline in the south of the lake. Increasing the resolution of the weather forecast led to a more accurate representation of the water temperature in the lake, including the deepening of the thermocline. The dataset was used in support of “The influence of weather forecast resolution on the circulation of Lake George, NY”.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:
# Methods The SUNTANS (Fringer et al 2006) hydrodynamic model was used to perform one-month-long simulations of Lake George, New York USA. The lake’s circulation was forced with three sets of weather forecast products. Each have a different horizontal resolution, 3 km, 1km and 0.333 km. Observations from moored vertical profilers at two locations, Tea Island and Anthony’s Nose, were used to validate the numerical simulation. Instructions on reading model data (Python) and creating figures used in the above referenced publication are provided in the "run_scripts.readme" file located in the "Additional model metadata and code" data resource. See the "Additional Info" section for more information on the metadata included in this file. # Model Data Model data is divided into three datasets - hexad02 = hydrodynamic model is forced with 3km weather - hexad03 = hydrodynamic model is forced with 1km weather - hexad04 = hydrodynamic model is forced with 0.333km weather
