Title:Bonanza Creek LTER: Yearly Seedfall Summary from 1957 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

The Yearly Seedfall Summary dataset includes seed counts and germination rates of Picea glauca, Picea mariana, Betula neoalaskana (papyrifera), Picea mariana, Larix larciana, Alnus crispa, and Alnus tenuifolia. Seeds are collected in .25m^2 trays located on the forest floor of the a selected set of LTER successional sites. Germination takes plaace in the BECRU lab facility at UAF.

Description:

Methods

Six seed trays are placed within each of the 8 LTER control plots at BCEF. Seed trays are 0.5 m x 0.5 m wooden frames constructed of 1" x 4" boards with fine screen stapled to the bottom side. The inside of the trays are lined with nylon mosquito netting. Seeds are collected in labeled paper bags separately by tray in the spring as soon after snowmelt as possible (usually in May) and sometimes in the fall just before freeze-up. Seedfall collections are removed to the lab and frozen until after the field season. Each sample is then sorted and all seeds counted. The first 100 seeds of each species is placed in a petri dish and allowed to germinate in the growth chamber. Annual stand summaries by site are produced. The seed year represents the year that the seeds were produced.
