General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-bnz.484.12
Title:Alaska Peatland Experiment: Biweekly flux data and environmental measurements (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth)
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset contains ecosystem respiration data measured biweekly at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) gradient plots. Five plots encompass the gradient all changing in dominant vegetation type. Plot labels are as follows: BS (Black Spruce), WB (Shrub), TG (Grass), EC (Sedge/forb), Control (Rich fen). Data set also includes environmental data (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth) taken at the same time as each flux.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Experimental Design

Each plot along the gradient included one flux collar, with the exception at the rich fen plot which contained 3 flux collars, permanently placed in the peat where ecosystem respiration fluxes were taken.

Methods

FIELD: Ecosystem respiration data was taken biweekly using 60cm x 60cm NEE static flux chambers connected to EGM-4 infrared gas analyzers by PP-systems. Chambers were covered so plants were not photosynthesizing to get an ecosystem respiration flux. Soil temperature was taken using 10 cm temperature thermisters placed in the peat directly next to the flux collar. Soil moisture was taken using a TRP-1 soil moisture probe inserted 5 cm into the peat. Seasonal thaw depth was taken using a tile probe inserted into the peat to the level of the seasonal ice. Water table depth was taken using PVC wells permanently placed in the peat. All environmental measurements were taken at the same time a flux was being taken.
