Alaska Peatland Experiment: 2011 Gradient Root Biomass data taken during peak biomass (late July)

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-bnz.487.12
Title:Alaska Peatland Experiment: 2011 Gradient Root Biomass data taken during peak biomass (late July)
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset includes root biomass data taken at peak biomass during the 2011 growing season. Data was collected at the Alaskan Peatland Experiment Gradient site. Root biomass was collected for the root respiration experiment conducted at the Sedge/forb and control plots of the Gradient site. The root respiration experiment was used to partition root respiration from ecosystem respiration a both of these plots.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Experimental Design

Cores were collected at three random locations inside each collar used in the root respiration experiment.

Methods

FIELD: Root biomass data were taken by collecting three 5 cm diameter, 20 cm depth soil cores at each of the 5 collars at each plot used for the root respiration experiment. LAB: Once in the lab, cores were cut in half lengthwise. Half of the core was weighed and then oven dried to get soil bulk density. The other half of the core was picked free of all roots using tweezers. Roots were sorted between live and dead and then sorted by species and/or functional group if possible. Roots were then weighed wet and dry to obtain a root biomass estimate.
