Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Experimental Design

The purpose is to compare N uptake between deep and shallow roots and between edge and centre plants to determine the capacity of vascular plant roots to take up N released from thawing permafrost.

Methods

FIELD: Carex aquatilis roots were excavated from thermokarst bogs and fed into HDPE bottles filled with porewater that had been spiked with (NH4)2SO4. Aliquots of porewater were removed after 4 and 8 hours, frozen, and shipped to the University of Guelph. Root tips submerged in the HDPE bottles were excised, frozen and shipped to the University of Guelph along with full Carex aquatilis plants that were harvested by hand from thermokarst bogs. LAB: Full plants were separated into roots and shoots. Root length and shoot height were measured and then each plant was dried and weighed.
