Title:Post-fire Variability in Siberian Alder in Interior Alaska: Distribution Patterns, Nitrogen Fixation Rates, and Ecosystem Consequences IX - Plant Identifications 2015
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This data set was collected as a part of Brian Houseman's MS Thesis, Post-fire Variability in Siberian Alder in Interior Alaska: Distribution Patterns, Nitrogen Fixation Rates, and Ecosystem Consequences (December 2017). Data include plant voucher collections that were collected on study plots in 2015. Data were collected on study plots established across two burn scars (2004 Boundary Fire and 1971 Wickersham Dome Fire) within the Yukon-Tanana Uplands ecoregion of interior Alaska.

Description:

Experimental Design

This study was designed to assess Siberian alder N-fixation input variability across post-fire age, fire severity levels, and stand types. Study plots were randomly located to capture the variability of environmental factors across the landscape. Detailed site information for each research location in this study is available within the BNZ-LTER Data Set entitled Post-fire Variability in Siberian Alder in Interior Alaska: Distribution Patterns, Nitrogen Fixation Rates, and Ecosystem Consequences X - Research Project Site Information 2014.

Methods

FIELD: A voucher speciment of all vascular and nonvascular plants that could not be identified to species in the field was collected and taken to the lab to be identified. LAB: Vascular plants were identified to species, when possible, using Hulten's Flora of Alaska; Wetland Sedges of Alaska by Tande and Lipkin; Willows of Interior Alaska by Collet; Alaska Trees and Shrubs by Viereck and Little; and A Field Guide to Alaska Grasses by Skinner. Mosses and liverworts were identified to species, when possible, using Schofield's Some Common Mosses of British Columbia; Mosses, Lichens, and Ferns of Northwest North America by Vitt, Marsh, and Bovey; and Mosses and Liverworts of Britain and Ireland: A Field Guide by Atherton, Bosanquet, and Lawley. Lichens were identified to species, when possible, using Mosses, Lichens, and Ferns of Northwest North America by Vitt, Marsh, and Bovey; and Lichens of North America by Brodo, Sharnoff, and Sharnoff.
