Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Methods

FIELD: One increment core of the complete stem diameter was collected 20 cm above the ground surface from each of the 16 study trees monitored for sap flux (8 white spruce and 8 paper birch) and from an additional 19 white spruce and 26 paper birch growing near the study site. The increment cores were generally collected in late September of 2018, with the exception of the 26 additional paper birch cores, which were collected in late May of 2016 for inclusion in a larger paper birch tree-ring dataset (Cahoon et al. 2018). LAB: The increment cores were air dried in paper straws, mounted in wooden blocks and sanded to 600 (white spruce) or 1200 grit (paper birch). White spruce cores were scanned at 1200 dpi and analyzed using WinDENDRO (Regent Instruments, Quebec, Canada). Paper birch cores were stained when necessary using phloroglucinol and HCl (Patterson 1959) and measured to the nearest 0.001 mm using a sliding bench micrometer and digital encoder (Velmex Inc., Bloomfield, New York, USA). Cross-dating of the tree-ring series was facilitated by the presence of narrow marker rings in 2013 for white spruce and in 1993 and 2010 for paper birch. The accuracy of the cross-dating was checked using COFECHA to identify potential dating errors (Holmes 1983).
