Description:

Experimental Design

The 30 aspen ramets sampled per site were chosen haphazardly from the set of all trees <2 m in height. The same trees were not sampled across years.

Methods

FIELD: Each year in June or July, after ALM larvae have died or pupated but before eclosion is common, we sampled one aspen shoot from each of 30 aspen ramets (<2m in height) at each of the four sites. Shoots were placed in plastic bags in a cooler and returned to the lab for processing. LAB: Data were collected from every leaf on each shoot. Leaf width was measured as an estimate of leaf size. The proportion of leaf area mined and leaf area missing were estimated visually by observers trained to estimate leaf damage and tested to ensure their estimates closely approximated measurements made using image analysis. Both sides of each leaf were examined under magnification. Mines were dissected in order to count locate and count dead and parasitized larvae. When they are finished feeding, larvae form a fold in the leaf in preparation for pupation. When present, folds were opened and status of the larva or pupa was recorded as live, dead, parasitized, or missing.

Description:

corrections

The proportion of the leaf that was mined reported in this dataset is the average of the proportion of the top and bottom leaf surfaces mined. ALM abundances reported in the dataset are the sum of ALM individuals detected by the observer on both the top and bottom leaf surfaces. Mean estimates of total ALM abundance from this annual survey are typically lower than mean egg abundances within a site a year because the deaths of eggs and tiny larvae can escape detection. (Egg abundances are reported in a separate dataset.) The number of ALM that completed feeding was determined by counting the total number of pupal folds present on the leaf. The number of ALM surviving pupation was determined by counting the number of live pupae within leaf folds at the time of dissection.
