Temporal transect of moss-associated N2 fixation rates in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Toolik

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-bnz.806.2
Title:Temporal transect of moss-associated N2 fixation rates in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Toolik
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This is a dataset coving multiple moss species (Hylocomium splendens, Ptilium crista-castrensis, Pleurozium schreberi, Sphagnum sp., others) and their associated d15N following incubation with 15N2 in June, July, and August over the course of one growing season in 2017. Three sites at each location (Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Toolik Field Station) were sampled. We measured rates of nitrogen fixation using 15N2 incubations in a common garden close to the sites of collection.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Experimental Design

Three locations, 9 sites, 6 plots per site.

Methods

Field: Mosses were collected from the field (roughly 20 stems/plot, 6 plots/site). Ten mosses were immediately placed in a drying over at 60C for 24 hours to measure the natural abundance of stable N isotopes. The second subsample of ten mosses was placed in a sealed syringe with 10ml of 15N2 gas for 24h. After incubation, samples were dried as described above. LAB: All moss samples (natural abundance and incubated) were ground and then weighed into tin capsules (target weight=6mg) for analysis on an IRMS at Northern Arizona University.
