Interior Alaska water chemistry 2015, 2018, 2019-2022

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-bnz.815.3
Title:Interior Alaska water chemistry 2015, 2018, 2019-2022
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset contains solute concentrations and stable isotope abundance for waters collected at French, Moose, Stuart, Vault and Poker Creeks near Fairbanks, Alaska. In addition to stream water, the dataset includes water samples collected from possible water sources to these streams, including precipitation, snow, soil water, springs, groundwater and other water bodies. Solutes include major anions and cations, dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, and total dissolved phosphorus. Isotope ratios for deuterium and 18O-water and 15N and 18O-nitrate are available at lower temporal frequency.

This work has been produced as part of the Long Term Ecological Research Program and data users should adhere to the Data Use Agreement of the Long Term Ecological Research Network. The consumer of these data (“Data User” herein) has an ethical obligation to cite it appropriately in any publication that results from its use. The Data User should realize that these data may be actively used by others for ongoing research and that coordination may be necessary to prevent duplicate publication. The Data User is urged to contact the authors of these data if any questions about methodology or results occur. Where appropriate, the Data User is encouraged to consider collaboration or coauthorship with the authors. The Data User should realize that misinterpretation of data may occur if used out of context of the original study. While substantial efforts are made to ensure the accuracy of data and associated documentation, complete accuracy of data sets cannot be guaranteed. Description:

Experimental Design

The dataset includes five boreal catchments.

Methods

FIELD: Water samples were collected as grab samples and filtered in the field (0.45 or 0.7 um) or collected by an autosampler and retrieved approximately every 1-2 weeks. LAB: Anions and cations were analyzed using an ion chromatograph (ICS-2100, Thermo Scientific) equipped with AC-11 and CS-16 columns, respectivly. Dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen were analyzed using a Total Organic Carbon Analyzer (TOC-L, Shimadzu). Total dissolved phosphorus was analyzed colorimetrically using the molybdate blue method on a Smartchem autoanalyzer after acid persulfate digestion. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios of water were analyzed using a Picarro L2120-i analyzer. Isotopes of nitrate were measured using the denitrifier method at the Stable Isotope Facility, UC Davis. Data below instrument limit of quatification (LOQ) for each analyte were replaced by values halfway between the LOQ and zero. The LOQs are 0.097 mg/L DOC, 0.018 mg/L TDN, 0.020 uM TDP, 0.065 uM fluoride, 0.198 uM chloride, 0.388 uM for sulfate, 0.275 uM bromide, uM 0.065 nitrate, 0.227 uM sodium, 0.612 uM ammonium, 0.147 uM potassium, 0.098 uM magnesium, and 0.471 uM calcium.
