Abstract:
This project calculates land surface temperature (LST) from remotely sensed imagery. The intent is to extend the previous version of the LST data for the CAP LTER study area in central Arizona, USA to include 2020 and update the products so that they are based on a composite of images from each year (all available cloud-free acquisitions from June, July, and August) in the analysis to reduce the potential for outlier images or pixels to impact analyses. The aim is to make updated LST data accessible to stakeholders and researchers studying the greater Phoenix, Arizona, USA metropolitan area. LST is calculated from cloud-free Landsat 5 and 8 imagery (30m resolution) from summer months (June, July, and August) in 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. All images are cropped to the CAP LTER study area boundary.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:
Landsat Level-2 Provisional Surface Temperature products, which are part of the U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) product bundle (Dwyer et al. 2018), were used for calculating LST. The Provisional Surface temperature values are computed from Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 thermal infrared bands and Top of Atmosphere (TOA) Reflectance. The calcuations are corrected for atmospheric variations between dates, sensors and locations (i.e., water vapor, ozone, aerosol optical thickness, clouds and digital elevation) using ancillary datasets such as Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Emissivity Database (GED) data, ASTER Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data, as well as atmospheric profiles, specific humidity, and air temperature from reanalysis data. The Provisional Surface Temperature data were accessed using Earth Explorer (https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/) in June 2021. All cloud-free (<1% cloud cover) images from June, July, and August during each year of analysis (1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020) were used for the calculation. Temperature values in Kelvin were converted to Celsius, and a composite for each year was computed using the average of the input images. Compositing was completed in ArcGIS. Images were reprojected to NAD_1983_2011_StatePlane_Arizona_Central_FIPS_0202. *Table 1*. Images included in yearly composites of LST. Abstract:Phase IV of the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER (CAP) continues to focus on the question: How do the ecosystem services provided by urban ecological infrastructure (UEI) affect human outcomes and behavior, and how do human actions affect patterns of urban ecosystem structure and function and, ultimately, urban sustainability and resilience? The overarching goal is to foster social-ecological urban research aimed at understanding these complex systems using a holistic, ecology of cities perspective while contributing to an ecology for cities that enhances urban sustainability and resilience. This goal is being met through four broad programmatic objectives: (1) use long-term observations and datasets to articulate and answer new questions requiring a long-term perspective; (2) develop and use predictive models and future-looking scenarios to help answer research questions; (3) employ existing urban ecological theory while articulating new theory; and (4) build transdisciplinary partnerships to foster resilience and enhance sustainability in urban ecosystems while educating urban dwellers of all ages and experiences. CAP IV research is organized around eight interdisciplinary questions and ten long-term datasets and experiments, and researchers are organized into eight Interdisciplinary Research Themes to pursue these long-term research questions.
