Abstract:
## overview The project aims to extend the CAP LTER long-term, land-use/land-cover (LULC) datasets to facilitate environmental change monitoring and social-ecological studies regarding urban sprawl and dynamics, urban heat islands, and outdoor water consumption, among others. Six LULC maps at 30 m resolution were previously created from 1985 to 2010 at five year intervals (Zhang and Li, 2017). This project updates that suite with a seventh map for 2015. As with the prior set, systematic object-based classification was utilized to ensure map consistency and direct comparison capability over time. The map comprises 11 land-use/land-cover classes with an overall accuracy of 89.1%. ## literature cited - Zhang, Y. and X. Li. 2017. Methods and Protocols

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:
The 2015 map is created based on Landsat 8 OLI imagery using an object-based forecasting classification method, with the 2010 LULC map used as the initial reference and updated using the 2015 imagery. This approach greatly improves efficiency by identifying and classifying only the changed areas based on the existing reference map. The image was classified using a supervised, object-based method in ArcGIS Pro. A large number of training samples were selected for each class based on high-resolution imagery. The image was segmented into objects based on spectral and spatial similarity, and the changed objects were classified using a random trees classification algorithm. Ancillary GIS data layers from the Maricopa Association of Governments, notably zoning, were used to improve accuracy. The map was manually assessed post-classification to correct misclassified areas and improve consistency. Accuracy assessment was performed using an independent set of testing data.

Abstract:Phase IV of the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER (CAP) continues to focus on the question: How do the ecosystem services provided by urban ecological infrastructure (UEI) affect human outcomes and behavior, and how do human actions affect patterns of urban ecosystem structure and function and, ultimately, urban sustainability and resilience? The overarching goal is to foster social-ecological urban research aimed at understanding these complex systems using a holistic, ecology of cities perspective while contributing to an ecology for cities that enhances urban sustainability and resilience. This goal is being met through four broad programmatic objectives: (1) use long-term observations and datasets to articulate and answer new questions requiring a long-term perspective; (2) develop and use predictive models and future-looking scenarios to help answer research questions; (3) employ existing urban ecological theory while articulating new theory; and (4) build transdisciplinary partnerships to foster resilience and enhance sustainability in urban ecosystems while educating urban dwellers of all ages and experiences. CAP IV research is organized around eight interdisciplinary questions and ten long-term datasets and experiments, and researchers are organized into eight Interdisciplinary Research Themes to pursue these long-term research questions.
