Title:Fish community data obtained from Antillean-Z fish trap deployment in the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Australia from June 2013 to August 2013
Alternate Identifier:ST_TDCS_Heithaus_001
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset consists of capture data of teleost communities caught in Antillean-Z fish traps deployed in 2013. Also included are anciliary environmental data as well as trap deployment information. This dataset will be used to determine changes in teleost community structure and abundance in response to an extreme temperature event and associated decline in seagrass cover in Shark Bay, Western Australia.

Abstract:

We are investigating how the roles of apex predators (in this case, tiger sharks) can interact with large-scale climactic disturbances to influence the structure, function, and processes of seagrass ecosystems. This project investigates multiple questions related to this interaction, from primary produce recovery to apex predator population dynamics, including mutliple investigations into the effects of a large scale decline on tiger shark prey abundance, community composition, and behavior.

Abstract:

The purpose of this dataset and study is to quantify how teleost populations change in response to heavy losses of resource species in seagrass beds. These data are collected after a major seagrass disturbance that removed approximately 95% of seagrass present in the study area. These data are collected in an identical way to data collected prior to the decline (in 2004) to determine the impacts these declines will have on teleost populations. It is important to know the effects these declines have because (1) they can be indicative of potential effects on commercially important teleost species; (2) teleost mesograzers are important food sources for large predators in the system; (3) teleost mesograzers can consume seagrass preferentially, potentially altering recovery pathways of the seagrass commuities by consuming some species and facilitating others. These data will fill these knowledge gaps and provide a better understanding of how teleost communities respond to drastic, widespread declines in seagrass cover, which are becoming increasingly common worldwide.
