Abstract:

We are investigating how apex predators (in this case, tiger sharks) can influence the structure, function, and processes of seagrass ecosystems via behavioural risk effects exerted on large-bodied prey (seagrass grazers such as sea cows and sea turtles, and fish grazers such as dolphins and cormorants). This project investigates multiple trophic pathways by which top predators can structure seagrass ecosystems (sharks-megagrazers-seagrasses, sharks-piscivores-fish-seagrasses) and focuses heavily on prey behaviour and mechanisms they use to minimize predation risk. Since 2012, we have also been studying the impact of a marine heat wave on Shark Bay's seagrasses and associated fauna. More generally, we are interested in whether large-scale climatic disturbances can interact with predator declines to affect ecosystem structure, function and resilience.
