Abstract:

The purpose of this project is to characterize the community structure of aquatic fauna (macroinvertebrates and fishes) and floating mats (including periphyton) across the heterogenous landscape of the NE Shark River Slough in Everglades NP. The community structure (abundance, biomass, and species composition) of floating mat, emergent vascular plants, fishes, and macroinvertebrates, and the spatial distribution of the latter in relation to hydrology, are among the key performance measures targeted for monitoring. The aim of our study is to provide a baseline characterization of these parameters so that the impact of future management activities (e.g., Modified Water Deliveries and Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) can be assessed.

The study area is sampled during the late wet season (September through November) to capture data when all sites are innundated with water and aquatic animal standing stocks are typically at their maximum. We document landscape-scale patterns in the NE Shark River Slough from this comprehensive sampling.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

The study area is sampled during the late wet season (September through November) to capture data when all sites are innundated with water and aquatic animal standing stocks are typically at their maximum. We document landscape-scale patterns in the NE Shark River Slough from this comprehensive sampling.

Most of our sampling is conducted using 1-m2 throw traps. Three throw-trap samples are collected per coordinate. Fishes and macroinvertebrates (e.g., crayfish and dragonfly nymphs) are collected using bar seines and dip nets and processed in the laboratory. Physical (water depth, percent aerial plant cover, percent floating mat cover) and vegetation information (plant density and composition) at each site are also recorded.

At each throw trap, water depth and plant height were measured. Plant and floating mat (including periphyton) cover of the throw-trap area were calculated, after which the floating mat volume was measured.

Instrument(s):Standard graduated cylinders and meter sticks. The throw trap used to sample was 85cm (H) x 100cm (W) x 100cm (L). The perimeter of the trap was covered with 3/16" mesh.
