General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-hbr.186.1
Title:Litter chemistry and masses for the MELNHE NxP fertilization experiment
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

The Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) project studies N, P, and Ca acquisition and limitation of forest productivity through a series of nutrient manipulations in northern hardwood forests. This data set includes litterfall chemistry for litter collected approximately weekly through the fall litterfall season, either composited over the entire fall season or selected from individual collection times, pre-treatment (2009), and post-treatment (2012, 2016, 2018).

Additional detail on the MELNHE project, including a datatable of site descriptions and a pdf file with the project description and diagram of plot configuration can be found in this data package: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=344

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and Protocols

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Sampling design:

At the Bartlett Experimental Forest (BEF) 3 plots per stand were established in 2004. The 4th plot in each stand was established in 2005. Jeffers Brook and Hubbard Brook plots were established in mid-age and mature stands in 2008-9. All measurements are made in the inner 30x30m of the 50x50 m plot. Within this inner plot, all overstory trees (> 10 cm DBH) are tagged for measurement. Mid-age stands at Hubbard Brook and Jeffers Brook are exceptions to this, with inner measurement plots of 20x20m. The inner 30x30 m plot is divided into nine 10x10 m subplots. Each subplot is referred to by the identification of the upper left post (see diagram). One litter basket (0.234 m2) is located in each of 5 subplots per plot (subplots A1, C1, B2, A3, C3 in stands with 30x30m inner measurement areas; subplots A1, A2, B1, B3, and Ce in stands with 20x20m inner measurement áreas).

Litter samples are collected from baskets approximately weekly during October and early November. Samples are composited in several ways prior to litter chemistry analysis. In 2009 samples litter was sorted by species and nutrient concentrations were weighted as proportions of total mass for one composite value per nutrient per plot. In 2012 chemistry was analyzed on samples that were composited over time for each individual basket; in 2016 samples were pooled into two composite samples per plot (AB = baskets A1, A3, and B2; CC = baskets C1 and C3) and chemistry was analyzed only for samples collected approximately Oct 22. In 2018 Oct 5 and Oct 15 collections were composited for analysis and the Oct 31 collection was analyzed separately, and within each collection period samples were also composited within plots (AB = baskets A1, A3, and B2; CC = baskets C1 and C3). Values for mass are the sum of the fall season for each year, and also for litter collected in spring after all of the beech had come down over winter.

Litter was ground to a fine powder using a Tecator mill and oven-dried prior to weighing for chemical analyses. Nitrogen and carbon were analyzed using a CN elemental analyzer. Phosphorus and other elements were analyzed using ICP-OS following dry-ash digestion in nitric acid.
