Dominant hardwood and conifer species were sampled in each stand.
Material collected included: bark without visible lichen at 1.3m above
ground; two cores from outer wood to pith 1m above ground; sun-exposed
leaves without evidence of herbivory or pathogens from the upper
canopy.
Samples were cleaned using DI water and freeze-dried to constant mass
at -80C and 7Pa. Dried samples were ground to homogenized particles.
For each type of tissue and species, samples were composited in groups
of three trees prior to Hg analysis. Hg concentration was determined
using thermal decomposition, catalytic conersion, amalgamation, and
atomic absorption spectrophotometry, using a Milestone DMA 80 direct
