Abstract:

Quantifying mercury (Hg) in tree tissues is essential to understanding the pools and fluxes of Hg in forest ecosystems. We collected and analyzed foliage, bark and bole wood of eight tree species at four sites in the northeastern USA (Huntington Forest, NY; Sleepers River, VT; Hubbard Brook, NH; Bear Brook, ME).

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Dominant hardwood and conifer species were sampled in each stand. Material collected included: bark without visible lichen at 1.3m above ground; two cores from outer wood to pith 1m above ground; sun-exposed leaves without evidence of herbivory or pathogens from the upper canopy.

Samples were cleaned using DI water and freeze-dried to constant mass at -80C and 7Pa. Dried samples were ground to homogenized particles. For each type of tissue and species, samples were composited in groups of three trees prior to Hg analysis. Hg concentration was determined using thermal decomposition, catalytic conersion, amalgamation, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, using a Milestone DMA 80 direct Hg analyzer. Complete details on methods can be found in Yang et al. 2018.
