Abstract:

This dataset presents numerous observations from a tethered balloon taken around HBEF on November 4-5, 2015. All measurements (unless specified otherwise) were taken at 30 second intervals.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Numerous observations were taken around HBEF from ~2100 UTC 4 Nov and ~1630 UTC 5 Nov 2015. Onset HOBO pendent temperature and/or U23 dataloggers were attached every 5 m along a 150m long tethered balloon that was tied to the guardrail at the Hubbard Brook bridge crossing of the main road. A mobile weather station (from Plymouth State Meteorology) was placed under the canopy several meters away from Sites 23. Manual observations of temperature, relative humidity and wind were taken at the mobile weather station site, in the clearings of sites 23 and 1, under the canopy next to Site 1, at the bridge, and ~20 m north of the bridge - all at 1-3 hour irregular intervals. The zenith angle of the balloon and/or sections of the tether were taken with a manual clinometer every hour, or more frequently if the balloon angle was changing by more than 10 degrees. All measurements (unless specified otherwise) were taken at 30 second intervals.
